Hello all - I had a BMX last Feb, and three weeks later I had a sentinel node biopsy on the right side. I have never noticed any effects of lymphedema. Recently I have been doing some heavy duty tree pruning and I notice my right side under the armpit, close to the SNB scar is burning a little and swells and feels like it is pulling. I had recon with implants, and the PS did extra pocket work at the exchange on that side. My arm is not swollen, nor is my hand. I would appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Thank you so much!

Hi, LucyDaisy! Are you really a farmer? How lucky if you are! Busy time of year, though, yes?

Burning, tingling, aching, heaviness, a full feeling--any of those are possible signs of early-stage lymphedema. And since it's easier to treat and manage when it's treated promptly, now's the perfect time to ask any member of your healthcare team for a referral to a well-qualified lymphedema therapist for an evaluation. S/he'll be able to tell from a physical exam if lymphedema is what you're dealing with, and if so, to relief the sensations you're experiencing and teach you how to keep it that way.

Here's how to find a well-trained lymphedema therapist near you:
    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Finding_a_Qualified_Lymphedema_Therapist.htm

And here's information about breast/chest lymphedema (it's called "truncal" lymphedema) while you're waiting for help:
    http://www.stepup-speakout.org/breast_chest_trunckal_lymphedema.htm
(Truncal lymphedema can be present without any swelling in your arm or hand.)

In the meantime, do keep an eye on the area, and if it develops redness, warmth to the touch, or sudden swelling and/or pain, hop on over to the doctor or ER right away, as cellulitis (a skin infection that is common when lymphedema is present and untreated) can spread rapidly.

Please keep us posted, and do feel free to ask any question that occur to you--lots of women here with a wealth of experience and a willingness to share it.Smile

    Gentle hug,
    Binney
