Bone scan
Hi,
Have random pain in my hips from time to time also burning pain in buttocks and shooting pain down the front of my leg.
I mentioned it to my nurse and she has put me forward for a bone scan, which I am having tomorrow. I am also awaiting a gnae op and diep later on this year.
I am so tired of all this
Any kind words for me to help me cope?

Hi Wintersocks,
I am sure more ladies will be along shortly to offer support and understanding. I certainly understand your frustration and exhaustion from all of this. I too suffer from extreme pain and have just underwent a hysterectomy and oopherectomy. Here is hoping that they discover the cause and are able to help you deal with the pain and discomfort. Sometimes I think not knowing what is causing our pain makes it that much more difficult to deal with it. I will be thinking of you tomorrow and will be jumping into your pocket for moral support.
Take care!

Hi there, I'm sorry you're experiencing this but glad your Onco is being agressive in seeking scans. Just some thought for consideration, sometimes pain as you described can be caused by a herniated disc pressing on your spinal cord in the lumbar area. Praying your bone scan is clear, but I'd suggest you speak with your GP as well. An MRI of the spine could tell if the pain is related to that type of spinal cord compression from a herniate disc. I had some similar pain, and had a herniated L4 that was compressing the spinal cord. For me surgery eventually became necessary. For many though, like my Husband, his pain was relieved by injections and he is now 3 years later still pain free. Good luck and keep us posted.

jcolford and bevin
Thank-you for your kind messages of support. Bevin I am really hoping it is something like you say, a disc problem would be great!
I have had the injection of the radioactive stuff and have to go back at 2.30 for the scan . It really hurt as I had to have it in the back of my hand as the veins are all too hard from the chemo.
I am not sure when I will get the result, I think I might wait for my BCN to phone me?? or wait till I see the consultant on the 9th?
Thank-you ladies and I will stay in touch, you are all my life line.
WSx

wintersocks - the pain you are having could be a number of things. I also have lower back pain that radiates down my leg. Bone scans are clean - MRI shows some disc degeneration. Hoping that your scan comes back clean and the you can get the pain under control.
Hang in there - although it seems that we are always climbing uphill, there are times where we get to coast down the other side. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

same here and it was nothing bone related but muscular...boy was I happy to hear that!

barsco and jenjel,
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I am home now and feeling exhausted. I was trying to read the radiographer's faces, but as usual they are inscrutable.
it would be interesting to know what bone mets feels like, but I guess pain is pain and it is probably difficult to say.
I was so keen to get outta there, that I exited sharply, leaving behind my rather fetching prosthesis! I then had to knock timidly on the door to recover it!!!
The radiographer brought it out on a little tray with paper towel covering it. She was deadly serious and very respectful.
But, it was funny and I had to laugh. then she smiled, albeit weakly.
Think I might need a glass of wine tonight!!

@wintersocks, when I have a scan, the most I can ever get anyone to tell me on the day is that they got all the necessary data. I hope all is well. I've also had symptoms similar to yours as a result of a bulging disk. This was years before my dx, so your symptoms could be totally unrelated to cancer. Stretching exercises helped a lot.
Also, for anyone who reads this thread in the future, be sure to tell the radiographers about it if you have had any recent injuries or incidents. A little while before I had my bone scan, I bumped my wrist, hard enough to cause swelling, while pruning a large rosebush. I mentioned this when I went in for the scan and was told it was a good thing I said something about it. I take it from this reaction that the wrist injury might possibly have caused a "false positive" for bone mets. As it was, my bone scan came up clear, and I hope yours does too, wintersocks.

Curveball,
Yes, they did actually ask me a similar question I recall now. If I had had any injury or accident, and the mad thing is I said no when in reality, about 2 weeks ago, I was carrying the recycling and somehow managed to trip - in an effort, to hold onto the glass stuff, I went sprawling onto the ground ouside and really hurt my arm, Heaven knows how I didn't break it. It was so sore for at least a week. whoops - it did cross my mind when she asked, but I deemed it too trivial....So you make a really good point - Thank-you. Perhaps I will mention it, when results are in.
Since returning, I am sliding into a meltdown and imagining all sorts, it really is just so awful , having tests and waiting for results. I am close to tears now but I have to keep it together for my 15 year old boy....
Also had a repeat scan for a cyst on my ovary, and waiting to se the gynae guy, for what needs doing - alongside my prolapse thing (need an op for that.)
I feel so upset.

-
Ladies,
I have just had a call from my BCN, the scan is clear. No sign of bone mets.
I am relieved of course and a big thank-you to all the wonderful ladies on here who supported me through this.
-
@wintersocks, that's great! Will you now be able to see another doctor to track down the cause of your leg symptoms? It sounds like you have a lot going on health-wise, no wonder you're upset. I hope now you will be able to get the care you need to get these various problems cleared up.

Years ago after I had a bone scan (they used to be done routinely after a diagnosis of breast cancer) The surgeon was very concerned when he saw 6 "hot spots" on my legs and hips and immediately thought bone cancer. He sent me for x-rays and the tech was a runner and recognized the spots as healed stress fractures in areas were runners usually get them.
As the others have said, there are so many reasons we have bone pain. Last year I had terrible back pain -thought I had pulled something in my back - turned out I had cracked 3 vertebrae from carrying a heavy sack of dog food!

Great news Wintersocks!

So happy for you Wintersocks!

curveball,
Yes, I think I will need to return to the Gp to find out what is going on as the pain still continues perhaps it's muscular or something like fybromyalgia? - it's very painful. I had a thought too that I don't think the femara is helping? I have read a lot of ladies get bone/joint pain. Will check with the onc team. Thanks so much for holding my hand throughout this. Next stop, gynae week after next, all tests done just need info on what to do next as have huge cyst....
dogsnjogs,.....put the sacks down!! - too heavy for you!
-
Such good news. I'm so happy for you!
-
Great news! I'm sorry you're in pain -- can they find something to help you?
-
pajim,
Thanks for your concern, I am going to go back to my GP and ask her what I should do next about this problem.
I told her about it some time ago, but she said she did not want me to have any more scans at the moment. It was my breast nurse that arranged the bone scan. Of course I am very pleased that was clear but I am still left with this debilitating pain.....
-
Could it be the Femara? I had terrible bone pain on Aromasin. Just a thought!

Wintersocks
So glad to hear of the clean scan.
I had the same type of pain at my dx. I for sure thought I had mets. Bone scan was clear but when I went for a massage I was told that I had one hip higher than the other. A couple of visits to the chiropractor and it was resolved -
Hiya Shoppy girl
Your suggestion is something I have considered too. My OH keeps remarking on my odd gait (my right foot sticks out when I walk) he says I should get it checked by a chiropracter or physio type person...
I don't take him seriously, but maybe I should, when I look at my shoes the right foot is worn down in an odd way.
I am not sure if I have the energy for it tho, BC + gynae probs, have Coeliac disease too + osteopenia as well as this hip stuff .
You are very kind to think of me. Thank-you.
-
Wintersocks, you are welcome! The massage therapist will be able to tell right away as one on the dimples on your lower will be higher than the other.
Take care!
