PARABENS – ARE THEY THE NEW NICOTINE?

Options

Parabens are chemicals used in the cosmetic industry to preserve products against bacteria and fungi. Parabens interfere with estrogen, and exposure to estrogen is a major influence on developing breast cancer. Studies by Dr. Philippa Darbre, a research scientist at the University of Reading in the UK,  have shown 5 different types of parabens in breast tumors.  One or more were found in 99% of samples and all five were found in 60% of samples.  The culprits are: butylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.

The Surgeon General put “Cautions” on cigarette packages beginning in the late 1960s.  These “Cautions” were upgraded in the 1970s to “Warnings” that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health.  And then in the mid-1980s the Surgeon General took a more definitive stance stating that smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and may complicate pregnancy.  However, as early as the 1930s concerns on the potential health risks of smoking were being raised publicly.  I don’t have 50 years to wait for the Surgeon General to take a stance on parabens – do you?
