so you DMX ladies, did you stay overnight in hospital after surgery? for how many nights?  was that the plan before you went in? or was it more of a wait and see situation?

I had a bilateral mastectomy without reconstruction. I was told I had to stay overnight. Outpatient/same day surgery was not an option. Prior to discharge, my nurse was telling me, "you don't have to go home if you're not ready". I was ready. Stayed 23hrs & that was enough.

BMX, no recon -- I was told I'd be in for definitely one night, possibly two, and I did end up staying 2 nights. I should have stayed 3 actually (was readmitted for 2 more nights a few days later). Not sure why surgery was so hard on me, most seem to only need one night's stay!

I stayed 2 nights and I think that was about right for me. My insurance had approved 5 nights.  Double Mastectomy, no reconstruction right now.

I am in Canada, and was told up front it was day surgery. Go in, take them off, and home you go. I however could not come out of the anesthetic, so was admitted for the night. Thank goodness for that, as I firmly believe I was better off being supervised for at least one night.

Mine was unilateral and I went home around lunchtime. Even if it was bilateral I could have gone home that day. I was thrilled to be home, in my own bed/recliner/bathroom, with my own germs and my own husband as nurse. The pain was controlled just fine with a few oral pain meds and an occasional ice pack.

Under ordinary circumstances, there's nothing the hospital can do for a recovering mx patient that can't be done at home. And there are a lot of very nasty bugs that can gang up on you in a hospital.

Yes, I stayed overnight. Good thing, too, because I spent several hours vomiting from anesthesia. No way could I have gone home. My DH had his hands full with me even with the nurses' help.

I had umx, but was home early afternoon. The nursing staff told me I had to wait until my surgeon could round on me (lunch time) and when he stopped by he said, " what are you still doing here?" He was kidding, and clearly taken aback when I replied, "just waiting for you to sign some discharge papers", but as I hadn't had any IV pain meds and had produced the required amount of urine, he signed off. I slept much better than I would have at the hospital.

I'm with Poodles. They couldn't stop my nausea from the anesthesia. Then I had an allergic reaction to the Lovonox. I had TEs placed and it was planned that I'd stay one night. I stayed two.

Intractable post-anesthesia vomiting is one of the relatively few reasons for an overnight stay, as is an allergic reaction. Fortunately these complications aren't too common.
