Can dairy be part of our diet?

I have seen multiple people post that they have eliminated dairy from their diet. Is that something we also need to eliminate? I asked my MO and he said it was ok to have dairy. I usually drink one class of organic milk a day, have one Greek yogurt, and one piece of cheese. Is this ok? I have changed my diet to eat more fruits and veggies, plan to juice once a day, eliminate beef and alcohol, only eat whole grain, and go totally organic. I don't want to have to give up dairy too :(

    Hi lmcclure;

Here are some helpful articles from the main Breastcancer.org site that can help clear things up for you:

    Hope this helps!

Choose low-fat dairy and alternatives. Good for calcium.

    Hi there,

my herbalist friend has been telling me for years to cut down the dairy, particularly after an Iris-diagnosis showed clear evidence that it doesn't agree with me, causing tons of mucus, sinusitis etc. I choose to kind of ignore that and just had my beloved daily Latte and cheese and butter and...BUT then came the breast cancer with the very strong ER + factor. Well, and after some research about the connection between dairy and estrogens and growth factors I decided to err on the side of caution after all and cut out the dairy as far as possible.

Having 2 kids and a butter/cheese addicted partner going completely dogmatic isn't an option and just would add so much more stress to my life, so for myself I just replace butter with non-dairy spread, milk with coconut-drink and no cheese apart from the odd slice of pizza and tinsy sprinkle of Parmesan on pasta...and it is possible to live a decent life without dairy. Positive side-effects are that I can actually breathe and apparantly snore less.

So, for women with ER+ cancer I would certainly recommend to do some research on the scientific evidence and give it a good thought whether it is worthwhile to do without or at least with significantly less dairy products in your diet.

    Hello everyone,

I was diagnosed with IDC TNBC nearly eight years ago and I asked my breast cancer consultant about the risk factors for breast cancer in general. She told me that she thought the growth factors in dairy products played a role. I have not eaten dairy products for nearly eight years.

Milk from cows is for calves not humans.

My information is that we cannot absorb calcium from cows and that osteoporosis is worse in countries with high dairy consumption!

I have regularly fresh soya unsweetened milk enriched with calcium citrate, as well as plain soy yoghurt with probiotics, unsweetened. The rest of my calcium comes from nuts and seeds, especially almonds.

For my osteoporosis I have a Solgar calcium citrate bone complex supplement, magnesium citrate, vitamin K and strontium citrate.

I am dead against any bisphosphonates, which is what is being pushed by the drug companies.

There is also a debate now about low fat diets and high carbohydrate ones.

    Best wishes.

    Sylvia

This is a pretty good summary of the calcium/milk/osteo issue. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/calcium-full-story/

I have low-fat milk in coffee only, eat low-fat plain (dairy) yogurt, rarely eat cheese, and drink organic unsweetened soy milk otherwise.

How about almond milk? Can we drink that in place of milk? Right now I switched to organic skim milk.
