Why don't I want to exercise?

Its been almost 5 years since my diagnosis, bilateral masectomy, chemo, reconstruction and in October I will be finished with the arimidex.  Before my diagnosis I went to the gym for an hour everyday, except Saturdays.  I ate very well and felt great.   Over the last 4 and a half years I just can't get motivated to go ( I am hot and cold) and I am eating worse than I ever have.  What the heck is going on with me?  Anyone going through this?  Frown

Perhaps depression. That's sure as heck what has happening for me.

were you pre-menopausal before and now post-menopausal?  chemo can throw a person right into menopause, with absolutely no kindness about the whole thing... hormones are all different... depression is common... insomnia... etc.

turns out the best medicine for how you're feeling is... you probably guessed it... get back out there! maybe opt for an outdoors exercise plan - start small - walk and enjoy some sunshine - spring has finally finally arrived up here in the north (thank goodness!)...  maybe hike about in a park or ride a bike or something.  just start small...

but maybe a different scene than what you did before diagnosis?

how about this?  try commiting to just 15 minutes a day for the next week...  that's just seven days.  see how that goes.  then, come back here and let folks know how it went... do you have any restrictions? or are you able to be physically active without restrictions?

sorry you're struggling so with motivation. once you get over the barrier... you'll feel better!

I also think the longer you don't exercise the easier it is to not exercise.  You forget how good it feels to exercise until you start doing it again.  Is there a local survivor exercise group anywhere in your area?  Maybe that would be a good place to start again.  Otherwise - is there some sport/activity you have always wanted to try but have never done (like tennis, yoga, golf, etc...)?  Maybe trying something new would also get you interested in getting more active again.
