Blood draw

Went for routine blood work this morning. Gave the vampire the non LE arm. Just for conversation I asked her if she had done draws in a leg

Oh yes, but only with dr orders and in a hospital. Oh? Why only that way? Because of blood clots.

She wouldn't budge from that statement. I'm no medical genius. But have not seen that reason here.

Thoughts?

Spookiesmom - just my experience, and I have only foot draws. Those, up until recently were only done at hospital where it was done by those who knew how. Now there is a person who can do them and travels around so I can have it done by her at Docs surgery. I cant remember whether they had to have special training or what, but feet are more tricky to do because the veins act differently and are more likely to "roll". It is aslo MUCH more painful if you get someone who pokes and prods and drills (Ouch) through lack of experience or incompetence. Blood clots might add a little risk as well.

IN any event its a case of weighing up the risk factor and the good vs the bad.

There was a thread about the foot draws somewhere here, but I hadn't seen the blood clot being mentioned. That's what stuck in my head.

Fortunately I can still give them my arm. I've had the misfortune of having multiple clots in legs and lungs at the same time. It wasn't fun

But why would a stick throw a clot?

I don't know about clots, but apparently it is different to do the draw. My DD is a nurse and does blood draws every day. I once asked if she'd ever had a request for a foot draw and she said she'd never had one but would refuse if asked. She said she'd never been taught how and wouldn't want to be poking around in someone's foot with a needle. So it's good for us to remember that if someone refuses to do a foot draw it might not be arbitrary but be from lack of skills.

Hopefully someone chimes in on the clots. This might be worth considering..... because of the close proximity and mass of veins and nerves etc, it would stand to reason that incompetency could easily result in damage. I still have nerve damage from someone who didnt place the needle properly.
