Can tight sport bras cause breast cancer?

It's not so tight to the point where it's hard to breathe, but it's pretty tight and sometimes after taking it off it hurts just a little and I feel so much better after taking it off. Also, if there are any links to explaining if tight sport bras cause breast cancer, that would be great.

Thanks !

No, it can't.    Most cases of breast cancer arise spontaneously from unknown causes, frustrating as that may be for our desire to explain/control everything.

If your bra is that tight, you probably need to go up a size.  You want it supportive, but not painful.

I have never heard of that specifically, but there was some suggestion a while back that underwire bras could be related to cancer risk.  It had to do with restricting the flow of fluid from the body's lymph system to the breast, therefore not properly cleaning out the bad cells.  There was some sort of 'study' done looking in hindsight at women who wear underwire bras and comparing thier breast cancer rates to those that do not.    This 'study' was not done with the scientific rigor of isolating a single variable, so the results are certainly questionable.   (i.e.  maybe it is possible that women who dont wear underwires...maybe no bra.. are thinner, healthier, eat more natural food or are common in any other way which may affect risk.)

Never wore an underwires in my life (or a too-tight sports bra). I was a C cup. DCIS on one side, IDC and DCIS on the other.

Absolutely not a factor and I agree with posters above. Get a bigger bra so you are not in pain!

There has been some speculation about bras/cancer/that they reduce lymph flow, etc. but nothing proven.

Still, if your sports bra hurts/is uncomfortable you should look for a different size or brand. I see no reason to continue to wear an ill fitting bra. It most likely won't cause BC, but why not find a comfortable bra?
