Latest Twist on My New Normal

I think at this point I can kind of joke about it, but a week ago I was not in a laughing frame of mind. So as I've traveled this journey I have been trying to grab all life can offer me. When our kids were out for spring break we had a cold spell here in MD and decided to take the family skiing, something I hadn't done in over 20 years. The conditions were PERFECT!!! Lots of fresh powder and I even took a refresher class to bring it all back to me. Having a lovely time and third time going down the mountain I take a fall and POP goes my knee! GACK! I knew immediately it was f-ed up and luckily for me a nice lady stopped to check on me and get the ski patrol and my family. They had to take me off the trail in a sled, then snow mobile, then to the ER for X-rays. Doc said nothing was broken, but it could be my meniscus. I of course have Dr. Google at my beck and call and pretty much figured it was my ACL by the description. Fast forward to yesterday and my ortho doc confirmed a complete tear of the ACL, along with a minor tear of the medial meniscus and some bone bruising. SHEESH! Just when I was trying to get my fat ass back in shape (had just joined Weight Watchers the week before and was going to the gym again) and this happens. Looks like PT for a while so the swelling and bruising can resolve, then surgery. Able to get around OK on one crutch now, and fortunately for me it was my left knee so I can still drive. Very uncomfortable and very painful at times, but I am just glad it wasn't a break or worse.

Anyway, that's part of LIVING I suppose, and I'll take this any day over what we've already been through!!!

Take care all!

Sharon

    Pupfoster1 - Sharon,

I had ACL reconstruction in 2004 following being pinned between two vehicles in 2003. (Colorado)

Had some serious physical therapy leading up to the surgery. I was/am a runner so that stunk I had to take time off. But was doing the elliptical prior to my surgical date.

Best advice I received was waking up from surgery with the CPM machine (continuous passive movement). Knee was moving passively following surgery and also had a machine when I returned home.

    Sorry about your setback!

Ugh!  What a pain! Good for you to take it in stride as part of life.  Sounds like you were grabbing life as you should. Don't let that bum knee stop you!  Wishing you speedy recovery and low pain.

Ouch! Sounds like it hurts, I'm sorry to hear this Sharon but love the great attitude you have.  I'm the same way...feel like things bruise, tear or injure easier now.  I can be "goofing off" with the kids and I hurt something.  Not sure if it's tx or just plain ol' age but at least we're here to feel every ache and pain, right.

Hi Sharon. Sorry to hear about your injury. I too gave up skiing. Too hard on my old bones... Anyway. I hope you  are up and around soon and maybe can find another ( perhaps gentler on your bod) exercise.
