1.5 yr. out from Lump and Rads - "Probably Benign" Mammo??
Hi - I am 1.5 years post lump and rads for level 2 DCIS, good margins, no Tamox (hormone neg). First 2 diagnostic mammos were all good (6 mos. apart). Last week radiologist read diag mammo and told me all was good. Yesterday got letter saying my mammo showed something that was "Probably Benign" which I read is defined as a cat 3 mammo rating. Recommendaton was 6 mo. follow-up to see if any changes, howeve I am doing mammos every 6 mos anyways since the DCIS. Yesterday I was totally worried and see surgeon Tuesday.
My question - anyone had a probably benign diagnostic mammo. outcome over a year after lump and rads for DCIS - and if so, what does this mean? Are there scars or changes that might commonly cause this is people who had lump and rads for DCIS? And the big question - is this an indication that since I had DCIS I am at risk for this probably benign change to likely turn into recurrence of either DCIS or invasive?
I hate revisiting all the anxiety that went with diagnosis, surgery and everything else that goes alone with DCIS. I had left it behind - only worry comes prior to mammo and now I am once again afraid.
Thanks for any help.

about the same point as you, I had stuff show up on my mamo, needed a biopsy but all was B9
also had another suspicious thing last year that turned out again to be nothing
my feeling is that the center was way careful and now I am less than a year to ending my ALs
keep busy and good luck that all is just caution

Hi - Thanks for the reply. I sort of hope the surgeon recommends a biopsy just to confirm it is nothing vs. waiting 6 mos. I will discuss with her on Tues. She is very careful and pre lumpectomy she thought she saw something on the other breast and did MRI and ultrasound but all was OK.
The 6 mo. testing just puts me on edge esp. after being on the other side of the odds when I was diagnosed. But I am trying to keep busy and hope all is good. Can't help but feeling that every 6 mos. I am dodging a bullet.

CarolSS, I had a suspicious area light up on an MRI at about one year and eight months post radiation. It was a BIRADS 4 and a biopsy was done. It turned out to be fat necrosis that resulted from surgery and radiation. I was stressed out for a time, but so glad it was benign. I'm hoping you will find out that your lesion is benign, too! {{hugs}}

I also had something show up on a mamo about a year out from lump/rads. I did a 3 month ultrasound followup and a 6 month mamo. The BS did not think it warranted a biopsy. It was confirmed to be just a cyst. I think that the radiologist scritinizes everyting a bit more carefully now that I have had cancer...which is what I want.
Good luck...i hope your is benign too!
