Probable next steps?

Options

I'm wondering if someone can help answer some questions about what is upcoming. I was just diagnosed with IDC last Friday based on a core biopsy. Still waiting to meet with the dr to discuss results. I found the lump. It did not show on mammogram. The test results say it is a 6 on Nottingham scale. What is the likely next step? Would they do an MRI to check other breast since lump was not visible on mammo? I am 43 and have a strong family history of cancers. How do they know if it has spread to nodes? Is that determined after surgery? How long is surgery recovery (not working) for MX vs lumpectomy?

Your questions are all on target but unfortunately the answers are variable. They can only be answered by the radiologist at the lab where you get your tests done, your oncologist, and your breast surgeon. Some answers will be based on the subtype of breast cancer you have (e.g., estrogen or progesterone positive or negative), the stage of the tumor, and personal preferences of your doctors.

The main thing to do right now is to find good doctors and they will guide you. I've seen a number of questions on this exact board where people tell where they live and ask if anyone knows good oncologists and breast surgeons in that area.

I hope this helps in such an anxiety laden time.

Feel free to private message (PM) me or other people on these boards who seem to be on your wavelength. Everyone here has been kind and helpful when I post or PM someone.

My next step after I had my first bx was the mri and sending off the braca genetic testing.

The genetic testing takes three weeks to come back, costs? 3000, takes a while for insurance to cover.

Next step is to get next available appt with sx so youcan get order for that mri.
