Lower lumbar MRI

Hi,

I had a MRI 12/3 a month before diagnosis, showed bulging disc in lower back. Pain persists, This week had MRI w contrast, doc called today this is what it says among other things-

Patchy enhancement within the descending nerve root sleeves at S1 and S2 could represent either benign inflammatory or malignant process.

I am stage 1, clear nodes, no IVF. How often does mets spread this quickly? He is sending me for a lumbar puncture to get the fluid out around inflammation. Said could be infection or micro tumors. Any thoughts? Anyone have any experience with this? Back has hurt since about July or August this isnt something new but it has worsened.
