How much longer does she have?

Hello,

My mom was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer about 3 and 1/2 years ago. It has spread from her breast/lymph nodes to her hip/hip bone, then into her liver, and now into her shoulder bone. She's currently on chemo, radiation, and numerous other drugs. Most days she just sleeps, gets sick, and is in a lot of pain, but there are those days (rare) when she's up and running a few errands. But I'm finally starting to accept that she's never going to get better, and as I wake up to reality I can't help but wonder how much time do I really have with her? In your own personal opinions, what do you think?

Thanks,

Rayne H.

RayneH, I am so sorry you and your mom are going through this vicious disease.  The journey is different for everyone and no one has an expiry date stamped on the bottom of their foot, so it's impossible to know.  There are some ladies on these boards that have surpassed 10 years after Stage IV diagnosis and others (like my Mum) who only get 9 months, so it's dependant on so many factors (age, general health, treatment choices, level of medical care, etc.).  My mom's cancer went a lot further than your mom's has (brain, stomach, pancreas, lung) and she didn't do any treatment.

Your job is to help your mom find pain freedom and that may mean you getting involved with her medical team.  There are a lot of drugs now that really address cancer pain well so, by all means, talk to your mom about pain management and find out if she is getting good service in this regard from her medical team or if you can help her with that.

Prayers going up for you and your mom.

    Margi
