Oophorectomy Surgery?

Just a question on this procedure recommendation from the MO and not sure whether this would be helpful to long term survival. I started Tamoxifen 10FEB since my cells show est/prog positive and the MO said to cut out my ovaries to stop the estrogen production. I also have a suspicious liver spot along with the breast lump. I don't want to have any surgery unnecessarily. Waiting to see if the tumor shrinks before deciding on any breast surgery.

If you had this surgery did it decrease the cancer growth? How long is the healing from this? Did you find it beneficial to your treatment? The Tamoxifen put me into instant menopause within 5 hours of taking the first pill.

Sorry for the disjointed thoughts but still trying to cope with all of this over the last two months.

    Hi Lynn,

I had a meeting with my MO today and we were discussing this same topic. I'm only 2 months out from chemo and my chemopause has already ended:(

I am getting set for radiation next so I am holding off on tamoxifen until it is ok'd by my rad onc. Without having the tamoxifen yet I figured I needed something to deal with the estrogen in the mean time. My MO wasn't to keen about suggesting surgery and instead immediately gave me a prescription for zoladex which decreases estrogen production. I actually picked up the first dose right after my appointment and a nurse gave me the shot right away.

You could ask your MO about this instead of having surgery. The other drug name I've heard is Lupron.

Good luck with the liver spot!

    Sheryl
