Not shampooing more than twice a week helps (I wear a shower cap). In between shampoos I use a dry shampoo and volumizing spray (both Perfect Hair Day by Living Proof). I do color my hair and get keratin treatments 3x/yr—the latter is the protein of which hair is made, and the treatment deposits keratin into the interstices of the hair shaft’s “shingles” and seals the cuticle, making each strand thicker & smoother. When I do wash my hair, I use a shampoo without sulfates or sodium chloride to avoid stripping the color and keratin. (Be careful and read those labels—even some shampoos labeled as “keratin” have sodium chloride). I alternate between two brands (a trick a stylist taught me years ago to make the shampoo & conditioner more effective): It’s a 10, and Giovanni—both containing keratin. I use the shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment for each brand, and either air-dry or use low heat and volume on the hairdryer. I also use a very wide-tooth detangling comb before I brush; that keeps shedding & breakage to a minimum.

And if I go out in windy weather (or I get a jerk of a cabdriver who refuses to roll up the windows and run the A/C), I always carry a spring-clip barrette to put my hair up to keep it from tangling & knotting. I didn’t do that years ago when I took a Jeep tour of the desert outside Phoenix—I didn’t know it would be an open Jeep and we’d be doing 65 mph on the freeway. My hair got so knotted and broken I had to cut off 6” of it. Ever since then, I’d gotten ever more frizz & breakages until I started doing keratin 5 yrs. ago.
