Radiation before lumpectomy?

I ran into a neighbor in the waiting area for rads today - he was there with his wife, who I didn't see as she had already gone in for treatment.   We started chatting and he was telling me that she is doing 14 rads prior to having a lumpectomy, and that she had a non-palpable tumor found on MRI, but he didn't seem to know much more detail than that, and I didn't want to pry, but it did get me curious as to when you would do radiation prior to a lumpectomy.   I looked on-line and could only find information about neoadjuvant chemo, which she is not having; nothing on just neoadjuvant radiation so I thought I would ask here in case anyone knows.

She could be stage iv.

Thanks LilSchatzie - I wondered about that, but didn't get that impression from her husband.  Of course, he didn't act entirely like he really knows what is going on with her .
