Just got bad bad mammogram result back (lump measures 9cmx10cm). Still in shock and super scared.  But so glad I found this forum!  Got referred to Dr. Jamie Escallon at Mount Sinai Hospital.  Anyone has any experience with Dr. Escallon?  Should I ask my family doctor to refer me to Princess Margaret Hospital instead as I heard they are really good at treating breast cancer.  Any input will be highly appreciated!  Thank you so much!!!

    Hi Skynet,

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I encourage you to meet with Dr Escallon. Once you meet him, I'm confident you will know your treatment is in good hands. He is affiliated with both PMH and Women's College Hospital, so even if you went to PMH you might end up with him anyway.

He performed my lumpectomy and sentinel node dissection three years ago with minimal scarring. Since then, I have had regular followup with him every 6 months and not with a fellow as I know is usual at both PMH and Sunnybrook.

One of my friends who was treated at PMH (also three years ago) was surprised to hear I was still seeing my surgical oncologist regularly as she has not seen hers since just after her surgery.

He has a caring, warm, calm manner. He is professional and explains everything clearly. He has helped guide me through the past three years. I always want to hug him because he's such a lovely human being!

In contrast, my radiation oncologist and medical oncologist both work out of Sunnybrook and I never look forward to my follow ups with the med onc (no follow up with rad onc needed). I know it's normal to only see the research fellows for follow up but I find it stressful seeing a different fellow every time I visit. They have your files for reference but never seem to know what's in those files.

The other thing I like about my appointments with Dr Escallon -- I have never had to wait long to see him. At Sunnybrook, it's frustrating to have to wait 3 to 4 hours for a 15 minute follow up with the med onc; that's normal for them.

If you go to ratemds.com (or just google his name), you will see that he is highly rated by past patients (5/5).

Feel free to send me a private message if you want further information.
