Core Biopsy Benign. Why do they want me to have an MRI?

Hello Everyone,

Sorry was meant to put so why do they want me to have a MRI.. but wouldnt let me edit lol x

Can anyone hep, i had my biopsy results today, the news was great, a Fibroadenoma? i am 43 and the doctors tells me this is most common in women in there teens - to 25, so he feels even though the Fibroadenoma is benign, i will benefit from a Brest MRI...

Can i ask if Fibroadenoma can ever become cancer? can it dissapear? i no they said i had Dense breast do you think this is the reason why i have to have a MRI, the doctor just said we wish to do more research on women over 40 who have fibroadenma.. slightly confused xxx

I think it's a good thing as your doctor is being overly-cauticious and thorough. From my understanding, it is extremely difficult to get insurance companies to "cover" the need for a MRI. A breast MRI will show everything the mammogram might miss. Plus you would have another type of image to compare to for the years to come. Such great news that your results are b9!

jaxter, congratulations on your benign biopsy result! You can read more about fibroadenomas in this article from the main Breastcancer.org site. As the article says, although they are benign, fibroadenomas can get bigger, so your doctor would want to follow up, and with dense breast tissue an MRI may be a better way to do that.

Are they putting you in a research study?

My friend just had an MRI as part of a research project-- different disease and she is not sick with anything. But, they asked her to take part in a diabetes study, I believe.

I would think they'd need your consent if you are part of a research project.....I would ask for clarification....

I am guessing that the doc wants to do MRI imaging due to the density - it is the best tool for women who have dense breasts - so they are most likely taking a more thorough look to confirm that nothing else is there.

More likely they want an MRI due to breast tissue density rather than the fibro.

Infact, in my state of CT, if a woman has a certain amount of dense tissue, the insurance company can NOT deny an MRI for these women. Infact on the back of every mammo report I get, I get a number that corresponds the amount of density of tissue.

I had the same thing. Core bio was b9 and I went for an follow up MRI. They just want to check and have something to compare in the future. Great news on the b9. Congrats!
