Intraoperative Radiation?

My BS mentioned different radiation options. Has anyone had or is planning on intraoperative radiation? I'm meeting with a RO this week to discuss but could use some personal advice from those in the trenches

Speedy, I had IORT with my lumpectomy on 2/22. Just yesterday I started having very tender skin on that breast. Monday the BS drew 30cc of fluid out - she says they see seroma more often with IORT patients. But I am glad to have rad over with.

Thanks for the response. I ended up having a second suspicious spot so IORT was no longer an option for me. I also had to have a mastectomy after having a lumpectomy so it was fortunate I didn't do the IORT.

My gyn has requested that my BS consider IORT (assuming they do a lumpectomy - will have my first appt with the BS this Friday to find out). The scholarly articles on the web are just brain-muddling but the wiki reads like publicity for it, so I was hoping someone here might have some information that could help me in making my decision.

I am glad IORT was an option for me and I would do it again. I had a sunburn-like reaction similar to what people getting external radiation experiecnce. For me, it was very easy to select IORT rather than 33 treatments.

Hi!  I am scheduled for surgery on August 27th and will have Oncoplastic surgery to remove ADHs/DCIS (rb 5mm, Stage 0, Grade 2 with focal necrosis, ER+ PR+) and breast reconstruction surgery to have left breast symmetry match the right side.  I will also have an IORT during my surgery... but somehow I'm still tossing and turning as to whether I want to decline the IORT procedure.  That's why I was hoping that others who have had it could shed more light on the side effects or their concerns over long term effects or problems with this procedure.  I would like to forego radiation therapy if my VNPI score will indicate that I won't need radiation but would have to contact Dr. Lagios and his office to read Pathology Report after surgery.  Thank you!
