Cancer Research Lab May Add New Research Initiatives.

The Frederick (MD) News-Post (1/3, Mabeus) reports, "The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research may soon add three research initiatives to its roster, upping its cachet as a leader in confronting the illnesses that fall under its umbrella, officials said recently." These "initiatives came out of discussions between Dr. Harold Varmus, director of the National Cancer Institute, and the Frederick National Lab's Advisory Committee, according to John Czajkowski, deputy director for management at the National Cancer Institute." One "initiative involves investigating therapeutic approaches to target mutations of a protein called ras, which is often activated in cancer." The second initiative involves putting together a tumor similarity database, and the third initiative would examine how to better predict a medication's activity in preclinical cancer trials in people.
