surgeon recommendation at sunnybrook
Hi everyone, this is my first post. Because my family doctor was on holidays over Christmas, I will be seeing her tomorrow with results of my ultrasound and mammogram ordered by a walk in doctor I had to see. I have a 2.3 cm tumour with irregular borders that did not show on my last mammogram done May, 2012. I am terrified and so depressed. The walk-in Dr. would not refer me to a surgeon and insisted I see my regular Dr. Although I live quite a distance from sunnybrook, I have read many very good comments on this board about it. Are there any surgeons that I should ask my family doctor for? She works out of Southlake, but I think I would feel better going to sunnybrook, at least for the surgery. thank-you for any replies and for letting me vent a little. Boy I hate this.

Sorry your Xmas was wrecked by this! Mine was two years ago.
I don't know any doctors at Sunnybrook, but what I do know is you want someone who does a LOT or specializes in such surgeries. -
I am sure your family doctor will be able to refer you to an excellent breast surgeon. Dr. Nancy Down at North York General is one of the best

Thank you for replies. I know the emotions I am feeling are normal, but it doesn't help the amount of worry /anxiety that is consuming me. I will try and be strong. I think having to wait two weeks because of the holidays has made it worse. I unfortunately don't have the greatest faith in my family doctor that is why I would like to see her armed with a recommendation for sunnybrook. Again thank you and if anyone has any other names that work out of sunnybrook, I would greatly appreciate it. Any other advice would be great!

I went to Sunnybrook on a recommendation from my doctor. It was the best thing I did, they have the breast cancer centre, they know what they are doing. I am in Mississauga so it is fairly far to travel during radiation it was hard, but I would rather be there than anywhere.
My breast surgeon was Dr Frances Wright and she is awesome. Plastic surgeon is Dr. Martou, Radiation oncologist Dr. Liu, the team is really really great! I have a med onc in Etobicoke at Trilium which was fine for me, the protocol for chemo I think is the same regardless of the hospital. Although I am not 100% sure about that.
Dr. Snell and Dr. Lipa are also really great, they are both on mat leave right now.
I know your doctor has to send over all your medical records, they review everything and set up an appointment shortly after. They are very efficient.
Let me know if you have any questions, I hope this helps.
