Tamoxifen & uterine fibroids & ovarian cysts
I've been taking tamoxifen for a little over 3 years. I had a ct scan yesterday because of a kidney stone and they also spotted 2 ovarian cysts (7mm and 9mm) and some uterine fibroids. They're sending me for an ultrasound on Wednesday. Anybody else have issues with this? Is it something to be concerned about? I have had the cysts before since starting the tamoxifen and they've always gone away on their own.

I had ovarian cysts and uterine wall thickening diagnosed after ~1 year on tamoxifen. I'm not sure if the cysts pre-dated tamoxifen or not; I'd never been dx with cysts nor had symptoms, but these cysts didn't have symptoms either. Since I'm ER+, and not at the place in life where I wanted children, I decided to have an ooph anyway, and the gyn went ahead and did a D&C and found fibroids. All was benign and the recovery from the ooph was fast. Not sure if this was helpful but best of luck with your ultrasound!

I had fibroids pre-BC & they really haven't changed that much after 1+ years on Tamox. The 7 & 9mm cysts are fairly small as far as cysts go, Pre-BC I had an 11.7"cm" cyst. It was fluid filled & resolved spontaneously(much to everyone's suprise at the time). I recently went thru the- 1) ultrasound 2) uterine biopsy 3) hydrosonagram 4) D&C/polypectomy
My ultrasound showed thickened lining & fibroids & small cysts in one ovary. The uterine Bx was negative. The hydrosonagram showed polpys(hopefully the cause of my funky bleeding). The D&C was negative & the polyps-B9.
I'm kinda suprised that they are calling your cysts "cysts". Did they mention anything about them being fluid filled. If so, during the menstraul cycle, we develop these cysts prior to ovulation. They usually refer to them as follicles & grow to 10mm prior to releasing an egg. Did they say they were solid or refer to them as masses. I would be more concerned then.
Good luck with your ultrasound. Do post your results. I learn so much from others on these boards & I'm afraid I'm in for more GYN issues

My general practitioner is the one who called me since he scheduled the CT scan looking for a kidney stone. He got the results late Friday night and my GYN was already off for the holiday weekend. He'll be in tomorrow am so I plan to call him first thing, my GP was going to send over the scans to his office on Friday night yet. I'm really not overly concerned...just waiting/wanting to get the ultrasound done tomorrow and get some answers. I didn't ask a lot of questions because he called as I was on the way home from work with my 2 kids in the car and my oldest can be a worrier so I try to limit her exposure to my medical stuff. It's been a long month, just getting over a nasty upper respiratory infection, all 4 members of my family had the stomach flu for Christmas, then the kidney stone and now this! Yikes! How long until spring break?

My MO has me getting a transvaginal ultrasound every 6 mos since starting Tamox. I do have a small fibroid now. But its very small and they are watching it. No symptoms that I can tell. Don't know if its something I would haven naturally developed or caused by the Tamoxifen? Doctors don't seem concerned but I am glad they check me every 6 mos.

Update: My ObGyn isn't concerned about the fibroids at all. We're just going to keep an eye on them when I see him yearly. There's only 1 ovarian cyst and it's 7 CM not MM. It's the same one that's been there for 2 years it's just gotten bigger. So...we're going to take it out. Out patient procedure, 2cm incision, back to normal activity within 48 hours. I can handle that!

salli-good luck with your upcoming surgery. It doesn't sound bad at all.

I'm new to this thread because I just got the results from the trans-vag/pelvic ultrasound baseline... not great. There might be a fibroid on my left ovary (I'll have to do another ultrasound in a couple of months) and the right ovary is full of cysts. Not a great way to start out on Tamoxifen. Not sure what the implications are. Anyone experience something like this? Thanks!

Hi there, I've been in Tamoxifen for nearly 3 years & had my 1st transvag US & saline US in Sept. Lots of fibroids, doc wasn't concerned but was watching 1 area for a possible polyp. Fast forward to today for another round of ultrasounds. Fibroids still there, polyp looks like a fibroid. The new addition was that I have ovarian cysts. She said it looks like I've recently ovulated & the cyst bled in on itself. And that it does not look like cancer. (Did she really have to say that word??) Of course this throws me into a tailspin. So I meet with the OB next week to see what we should do next. Deep breaths...
