"Happy New Year!!!" (insert false gaiety)
If --and only if-- you either dread, hate or have nothing but contempt for New Year celebration and all the false hype, please post here. Perhaps we can help each other walk from 2012 to 2013 without feeling like the only ones who don't feel "oh, so happyyyy!!!!"
The last year I felt ended really well for me was 2008 - and in early 2009 I was diagnosed with cancer. At this point, I am dreading what could happen next month. I usually end years better off than how I start them, but calamity inevitably strikes shortly thereafter.
For at least ten days, I also dread having everyone saying "Happy New Year!!!!" with big, big smiles on their face.

Oh, I do so know what you're talking about. My husband and I are walking around the house like zombies. No one can figure out why we're not in the festive spirit. Im thinking I did well to get through Christmas smiling at everybody, now here comes New Years. Scanic attacks are on the rise cause I have mine the second week in January and have no idea what the outcome of those will be...This is one old chick that will be in bed early New Years eve.....
-
I wouldn't say I "dread, hate or have nothing but contempt for" New Years, but I do think it's highly overrated.
Big honkin' New Year's Eve parties just give me hives. I've never been the kind of person who ushers the old year out and celebrates the new year in by wearing a funny hat, getting wasted, and passing out in the flowerbed.
And I've never understood the reasoning behind picking just one day of the year to reflect on where I've been, and making up a bunch of idealistic "to do" resolutions, when that's something I can do every day.
If I want a "fresh start" on something, I can do that today, not wait til January 1st....
DH and I spend New Year's Eve at home, eating popcorn and watching a video, and at 9 pm our time, we switch over to satellite TV to see the ball drop in Times Square (old habit) and then we go to bed.

bump! Keep the complaints and negative posts coming, sisters - it makes me feel so much better - and you too, I hope!
Arrrrrgggghhhhh!! It is Saturday evening. I went shopping and already people were saying "Happy New Year's" with huge smiles.
Think I will have to start hibernating now.

I dread 2013 before it even began...my son is goin for surgery in Jan.Im goin for surgery after that and I plan on moving to cold PA sometime in between. My plate is full.
Dont feel like ringing in the new year with a smile.
-
Hoping your son does well, Grannydukes.
Just got off the phone with my mother and learned that my favorite aunt could be quite ill.
-
Just got word Thurs. that my 2 sisters are going to Cancun just after New Years instead of Fla. like we had planned, and did I want to go? Oh sure, like between my weekly chemos not to mention I dont have a passport...Happy New Year to you too!!!!
-
Oh, yeah, Mary - another crappy part about New Year's - poeple making plans and not including you! (skiing in my case)

Countdown begins. Funnily enough, I have made plans for this weekend but not tonight. I had the choice of either spending an evening with some very sick elders in my family or going bar and band hopping with a cousin. But guess what I do not like live music unless it is absolutely superb - if Louis Armstrong were to come back to the world and play, well yes. Or if Rene Fleming were to sing....we of course. Other than that, no thanks. Bad, loud music os not great for conversation.
Trying to think of "ignoring New Year's things to do"
-
We're staying home, ordering chinese food and will have a bottle of bubbly. Zombie movies tonight!
-
((((Blue)))) The zombie movie sounds like the perfect prescription for tonight!

I've never been excited about New Year's. Its just another date to remember to write on my check, a new deductible for Medicare, another reason to be cautious of drunk drivers.
Athena, the last good year I remember in recent history was 2007. My husband had a good job, had been alcohol free for years. In 2008 he fell off the wagon, and my pastor had a heart attack, and my 20 year old son started having kidney problems. In march 09 my beautiful son was diagnosed HIV positive. He'd already battled Type I diabetes from age 6, had problems growing too, so at age 13 along with 4 insulin injections a day, he also took a growth hormone injection. Two weeks after that devastating news, my beloved Aunt June fell in her home and suffered a severe head injury. She came straight to my home from rehab. I did everything for her including adult diapers for 3 1/2 years. She passed away on June 26.
A couple of weeks after her death, I noticed some nipple tenderness, which reminded me I was late for my mammo. It turns out, I was so busy looking after everyone else I had let 3 years go by without getting one. I got the dx 1 month after my aunt's death.
So, we will watch a movie on T.V. Have a snack, kiss at midnight, then say goodnight.
I get much more excited about the Jewish New Year which is in the Fall. As far as I'm concerned, that is God's calendar.
Blessings.......No Matter The Year

I woke up today and realized it was New Year's Eve! Told my husband and he was surprised too! Granted, we are very disoriented after a long trip back from India, but I think the memory lapses also reveal our total disinterest in the occasion, lol. We'll be going out to eat at 4, and then head home to hide from all revelers. I hate crowds and phony expressions of happiness, both of which will be in abundance tonight. IF I am awake at midnight, I will kiss my DH to ring in the New Year, right before nodding off. : )

Man, Mods, you are supposed to wish us a crappy New Year's and state, assiduously, that you hope our nightmares come true. That way we don't tempt the fates.
I hope YOUR New Year's is whatever you want it to be. Thank you for this site. It has made a huge differences to so many lives.

Ha Ha, funny thread, love the comments especially:
"the kind that celebrates the new year in by wearing a funny hat, getting wasted, and passing out in the flowerbed"...
What I can't stand about it are the parties where I have to endure getting mushy kisses at midnight by men I don't like!!!
But this year we kept it simple and just went to the beach to watch the sunset, came back and were off to bed at 11pm. I always take my camera to the beach, so here's a picture celebrating the last sunset of 2012.
