Popsicles.....lots of popsicles. I think they make them sugar-free? If you have a yucky white film in your mouth (like on your tongue maybe), it could be thrush. That hurts sometimes. If that's the case, your onc can prescribe a rinse-and-swallow mouthwash that will help. It's gross, but it helps. I feel for you.

Connie, this article on Mouth and Throat Sores from the main Breastcancer.org site gives some information on managing symptoms that may help you, as well as a list of treatments known to cause problems.

I used Biotene toothpaste & mouthwash - you can find them in any drug store and some grocery stores - they are made specifically for dry mouth and were recommended by my chemo nurses. I rinsed my mouth out several times a day with the Biotene, especially after eating, and I never had any mouth sores or other problems. Hope this helps and you feel better soon!

For the dry mouth, try that Biotene mouthwash and gum to see if that helps.  As for the sore mouth, you may want to start rinsing your mouth several times a day/rinse after eating with a salt/baking soda rinse you can make at home:    1/4 teaspoon baking soda + 1/4 teaspoon of salt + 1 cup of warm water.   You make a fresh batch every time you rinse your mouth.

You may want to brush your teeth after eating also.  I had that raw mouth feeling after the chemo round and sometimes would use a salt and warm water rinse which did make my mouth feel a little better.

During your next chemo, you may try sucking on ice during the infusion and afterwards to see it that helps with the mouth sores/raw mouth.

Ketchup/tomatoes are acidic which explains for that burning sensation.  You may want to avoid high acidic foods like ketchup and citrus for a little while.

I had the same problem and I stopped eating all acidic foods and ate more bland foods.  I also second (or third or fourth) the biotene products and the salt/baking soda rinses.  I also developed heartburn/sour stomach and if you do tell your docs right away cause they can give you somethign for that.  As for the acidic feeling on your mouth avoiding anythign that bothers it is all I found that worked.

I am 5 weeks PFC and found that I can tolerate most acidic foods again.  Some still bother me, but it is getting better . ..
