This is hardly news - the NIH is the world's premier biomedical funder and has been for many years. Unfortunately there may be steep cuts to its budget next year, as it falls under the category of discretionary spending.

ETA: NIH funding is also an important source of revenue for medical schools and teaching hospitals.

Agreed.   They have a more fair standard for funding basic/long term research based on scientific merit.   So it's a good idea to check the researchers/project you want to donate, whether they get NIH funding or not tells you some important information.
