Emma - My mother had breast cancer in her late 60's; that was over 20 years ago. I was dx with BC in January 2010 and my sister just last Fall. Mine was IDC Stage 2 and hers was LDC...I had 33 rads treatments. Follow up mammograms have been good as have my sister's. The ONC asked my sister if she wanted to have that test which made no sense to me. She has BC so whats the point? Remember though just because you have the gene doesnt mean you will get it. Having the test will prep you for the possibility. My sister and I chose not to have the test beforehand because neither of us wanted to be in a wait and see mode however there may be things you can be on the look out for if you care carrying the gene. Also you have children as do I so they need to know. My daughter has mammograms because of my dx. My sister doesnt have any children. If you dont have it thats a good thing but dont know about guarantees. The dr will be able to tell you the answer to that. Sorry I just dont know but also remember if you God forbid get it they have come a long way in treatment plans. SO your mom died of BC?  Diane

I would welcome gene testing. I would want to be proactive and do all I could to find a cancer before it had a chance to grow and spread.  If it was discovered that I had a "cancer" gene, my doctors and I could then be on the look out for signs of cancer. Additional screening or testing may be indicated.

Also, the gene test would be enable your doctors to recommend a particular course of treatment for your particular type of cancer.  Not all breast cancers are the same.  There are may types of breast cancer. Treatment and medication needs to be tailored to your particular type of cancer. The more info the doctors have about a person's cancer, the better they can design a course of treatment. Take care!
