Proton therapy instead of traditional radiation?

Just wondering if anyone has done proton therapy instead of regular radiation- I am looking for information on this and it is relatively new so I am not finding alot but it looks like they are starting to use it for breast cancer now.

Hi damiana9,

I looked into proton therapy when I was first diagnosed, but it was just starting to be used for early stage breast cancer.  I contacted Loma Linda, but they were just gearing up for a trial and I did not fit their criteria.  Here is a link regarding their clinical trial http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01310530

I think MD Anderson is also conducting Proton Therapy for early stage breast cancer.

Thanks. I dont fit the criteria either. I am waiting to hear back from MD Anderson to see if it is an option for me or not. Sure would be nice!

Hi, I posted this question a few weeks ago and didn't hear anything. I was wondering if I was the only one being offered proton radiation. I was offered it as part of a clinical trial at Mass General, Dr. Shannon MacDonald. I ended up going with standard radiation since there isn't a lot of history with proton radiation and breast cancer and there were only 18 people in the trial. It's too bad you are not closer to MGH since you would qualify for this trial.

Thanks for the link Sduch1- I will look into it.  I wonder if they are doing this trial nationally or just at that hospital.

I had proton therapy and I am currentlly 1 year post treatment. 

Diagnosed:  1/2011 - IDC 3cm, 14/19 lymphnodes, ER+ PR+, HER2+, stage IIIC

                   AC X 4, Taxol weekly X 12, Herceptin 1 year and currently on Tamoxifen

Sisi- where did you have proton therapy at? 

from everything that I have looked into, I think it just isn't an option for me- bummer!  It sure would have been nice if it were something I could seriously consider.

I just finished protons as well and got through it really well. I would recommend it.

I recently read that it will be coming to Georgia in 2016.
