I am Stage 1 BRCA1 positive, with a Triple Negative I have already had a double Mastectomy (I had it in both breasts). My Lymphnodes came back clean. I just finished my 4 doses of AC and the oncologist wants to add in 12 doses over the next 12 weeks of Taxol. Has anybody else has this treatment and do you know why?

Hi GloriaMcC, and welcome to BCO.

Until other members post with their experiences, you might want to look at the information about Taxol (chemical name Paclitaxel) from the main Breastcancer.org site.

It includes this: "Taxol usually is given in combination with other chemotherapy medicines and is used after surgery to • Reduce the risk of early-stage breast cancer coming back"

    Hi Gloria

I am in a similar situation as you.....stage 1 no nodes, Brca 1+, just finished a horrid run with A/C. I will be starting on taxol soon....my blood counts have been awful...low WBC and low RBC's... But I am hanging in there...I get both Nulasta and NUPOGEN when it is really low...Taxol is one of the standard chemo's. good. Luck, message me if you have any questions....oh..I also had a BMX as you had.....good thing...good luck keep in touch

Hi Gloria - I am BRCA2+   I did A/C then T, both dose dense (4x each every other week).  I have not idea why some get 12x Taxol versus dose dense.  I had a much harder time with Taxol - peripheral neuropathy, bone/muscle pain during chemo, but the neuropathy persists months later.  Most do not get it as bad as me, plus for a BRCA positive person, I'm older. I think we are at higher risk for neuropathy.  I am not triple negative - which is considered a Basal subtype. My MO says Luminal B subtype.

The real reason I wanted to post to you is that I had a 3rd regime of chemo...Carboplatin.  Once a week for 6 weeks (very easy chemo, btw).  The Platins seem to specifically attack BRCA type cancers. This was Rx'd via OHSU in Portland by Dr. Stephen Chui.  This is not standard protocol, but there are clinical studies underway about this, as well as PARP inhibitors (I did not get those).
