DCIS not detected by mammogram
I was just dx w DCIS today. I knew something was awry around Memorial Day when somehow I ended up naked in the mirror and raised my r arm to brush my hair (I can't say I did the most through self breast exams:). Anyhow I noticed a slight dimple ( or skin retraction as the called it on the path report). Ended up w neg mammo and US. Saw a BS (surgeon and oncologist) who didn't seem convinced but did order a MRI. That's how they found it. Bx last tues w the rest down in history!
She even said today I was fortunate.
Would have never felt fortunate to be dx w BC, but after the waiting and wondering, I am happy to say I will be a mother, daughter, girlfriend, sister, aunt, friend and boss BC survivor!
Looking to have a lumpectomy next mo and rads to follow. If they find IDC, I will deal w Chemo too.
Finding comfort in this site and feel like a weight has been lifted...

Your BS is awesome for ordering the MRI. I had to ask for one. I'd read that MRI is more accurate for high-grade DCIS, but yours is intermediate-grade -- very interesting. Yay for multiple sources of imaging! Your attitude sounds great -- you are going to get through this just fine. Best wishes for a smooth treatment!

I was diagnosed with intermediate grade DCIS using an MRI. I had requested an MRI because mammograms are extremely painful for me. After getting the MRI and having 2 highly suspicious areas, I then had the most up-to-date mammogram (only 10 in the country) on the market and an ultrasound which showed nothing. Everyone said I was so lucky I got an MRI. For my follow-up I will always have MRI's. By the way, only one of the two areas ended up being DCIS. I wish they would change the standard of care for people who have dense breasts that they are allowed an MRI along with the mammo.

I must have had one of those uptodate mris as it is the only one in the area. I am certainly going to request this (and hopefully ins will approve it) from now on.. Not that I don't trust mammo's but one you have something that didn't show previously, I think they should be standard. My md said 80% show in MRI. Not sure if I want to take the chance or wait till it grows into a larger mass in hopes it shows up. Currently guessed at 1.6 cm on MRI, which is kinda big to me!!!
