Diagnosed 4 wks ago with IDC, Grade 1, 1cm with some DCIS, ER+,PR+,HER2-, via ultrasound core biopsy.  MRI of breasts, at my insistance, revealed a papilloma lesion with focal minimal atypical features, 4-5mm in same breast but different location.  Told by breast surgeon the lesion must be removed as well.  Prior to MRI, breast surgeon suggested either mastectomy with hormone therapy  OR  lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy, followed by external beam radiation with boost (or a detour to chemo before radiation if the nodes are involved) and then five years of hormone therapy.  I have osteopenia already, am late 50s, post-menopausal still experiencing hot flashes but went off the Combipatch the day I got the diagnosis.  I also have M.S. but have been off DMT for five years since have been doing so well.  Neurologist says nothing need to consider from his perspective while addressing the cancer treatment.

With additional diagnosis of atypical papilloma am now facing a double lumpectomy.  Don't know whether to have a mastectomy because of potential deformity with having a double lumpectomy - how deformed will my breast be, i wonder.  Will mastectomy reduce chances of recurrence?  BS said that radiation to breast makes it feel "woody" but haven't found where on this site to read about that.  BS also said that radiation makes future reconstruction more difficult.  The hormone therapy sounds awful; does a double mastectomy eliminate having to do that?
