Guidelines Recommend Using Actual Patient Weight In Calculating Dosage.

Pharmacy Practice News (8/21, O'Rourke) reports, "The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has released guidelines recommending that physicians and pharmacists use an obese patient's actual body weight, rather than ideal body weight, to calculate the appropriate dose of nearly all chemotherapy drugs. Although many pharmacists were already following this practice, the guidelines provide clarity and support." The article quotes Leigh Boehmer, PharmD, BCOP, a clinical pharmacist in medical oncology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and Sara Kim, PharmD, BCOP, an oncology pharmacy clinical coordinator at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, in New York City, as both pleased by the new recommendations. "Dr. Boehmer said there are a few exceptions to dosing on actual body weight, and these are highlighted in the guidelines."
