How Soon After BMX Were You Able To Exercise???

Hi everyone,

I am having a BMX with immediate recon with no chemo/rads on 8-8-12. For others who went through the same/similar experience, how quickly were you able to resume exercising?
I have felt so fat during the past two weeks (due to being sad/going back and forth to doctor's appts) as I have been eating terribly. I used to try to run a few miles everyday (if not run - depending on the heat) or at least walk a few miles everyday. I also would do pushups (which I am sure I will not be able to do for a long long time haha), squats and whatnot. I also did yoga during the school year to deal with the stresses of grad school.
Thanks so much!

hi justegan, I started a walking program two weeks after BMX without recon.  Started doing yoga six months after that.  You'll be surprised at how much you use your chest muscles for everyday activities, like driving.  Be safe, follow doctors orders, and listen to your body.

    Good luck on Weds!  ((hugs))

I had BMX with TE's placed and my PS would not let me exercise at the gym for a month.  About 2 weeks post OP I started walking.  At 1 month post OP I was back at the gym on the elliptical but was not using my arms much.  I slowly added my arms.  I did to post surgery rehab exercises twice daily after my surgery and started doing them about a week or so post surgery.  I also started working with a physical therapist about 3 or 4 weeks post surgery to help me get range of motion back.

Justegan, I asked my PS about getting back to regular activities and she said the usual go-at-your-own-pace, do-what-you-feel-comfortable stuff until I asked about getting back to yoga. The she VERY EMPHATICALLY told me not to even try until I at least had my stitches removed. She seemed surprised when I asked. What, a 61 yr old grandmother is not your typical yoga lover?

So if I were you I'd get back to things slowly. You'll get back to everything you want to do eventually, it'll just take time.

    Best of luck.

    Leah,

That makes me so sad! I love yoga so much and will miss the yoga classes I attended =(. I go to one back at school and it was the BEST stress reliever. Well, I'll figure it out I'm sure =)

    Thanks!

Justegan, go slow, you'll get there. Stitches should be out within a few weeks of surgery so after that you should be OK.

    Just GO SLOW.

    Leah,

I need to remember that since I am used to running on high speed in my life!

My PS encouraged walking, so I was walking the day after my surgery.  She had a strict "no jiggling" rule for 6 weeks after each surgery - I could walk, but not run or elliptical, and no weights/yoga for 6 weeks.  Six of the longest weeks of my life!  But it's worth it - you don't want to take the chance of setting back your healing, developing seromas, triggering lymphedema, etc.  Sometimes less is more, especially when recovering from surgery.  As Leah says, GO SLOW!!!

And as Badger said, come over and check out the Let's Post our Daily Exercise Thread!

Thanks NatFan, I ended up walking around the hospital over a dozen times yesterday and was able to life my arms....not what I expected after surgery lol.
