Pathology report question?
Diagnosis of multifocal DCIS & IDC.. i asked if the DCIS along with IDC meant it had just broke from the duct,, the nurse said yes.. then the surgeon said no, all IDC path reports say DCIS also because thats how they all started,, Was DCIS on your pathology report along with IDC?? thanks!

For what it's worth, there was no mention of DCIS on the path for either my biopsy or lumpectomy. I was diagnosed about 3 years ago as the hospital was being sold to Hopkins.
It seems like an odd thing for a breast surgeon to be saying.
-
I agree.. Each biopsy (3) came back DCIS and idc.. Which I was confused by..
-
Mine said IDC, DCIS and ILC. I figured the DCIS was something new, but maybe it was the original cancer. Interesting question. Calling Bessie!

I had IDC & DCIS on both of my tumors. I also thought that IDC started as DCIS. Maybe there are other ways for IDC to start. Haven't looked into that?
-
Mine was IDC only. No DCIS in either path report, one excisional biopsy and another to get cleaner margins.
-
I had two areas of DCIS, with two microinvasions of IDC.
The way it was explained to me was that the DCIS had become invasive and IDC cells were no longer contained within the duct.

Mine was IDC only...

my original dx was dcis and i was scheduled for lumpectomy. After the mri, they found a dcis in another area, same breast but too far away for lumpectomy so it was switched to mastectomy. A few days later, bs calls and says one of the dcis's was actually idc.... she said it started as dcis but had a tiny invasion (less than 1/2 cm.). After surgery, the dcis and the idc are both gone which is the good news here. Hopefully it will be the same for you, Angel..

Hi Angel - when they did my biopsy they thought I might have IDC, but when they did my lumpectomy they only found 6cm of DCIS, but did not get clear margins. So I had to have a UMX which then found I have another 7cm of DCIS plus 6mm of IDC. And on my second pathology report they both listed the DCIS and the IDC.
Now following my UMX I am DNE and cancer FREE - hope that helps

My original pathology report stated that it was approximately 75% DCIS and 25% aggressive IDC. After chemo and lumpectomy, it was DCIS only.
-
Mine was both DCIS and IDC for both tumors.
-
I had both. I always assumed that every invasive had to start as in situ. Interesting!
-
I had both. My understanding is that some docs think DCIS can "turn into" IDC. (not sure if that's true. I haven't done the research). In my case, my tumor was small and only part of it was IDC, so I guess I should be lucky that the DCIS was there or they may not have found it at all. Good luck. These path reports are confusing.
-
I had both too. Clean margins. The DCIS was identified with pathology. Surgeon said it's pretty common and to not worry (mine were in the same tumor area).
-
Yes, mine was 1.2 cm idc with less than 10% DCIS.
-
I had both too. Mine was 50% DCIS and 50% IDC. I think it starts as DCIS then progresses into IDC if it is caught early. Half and Half.
-
I had both IDC and DCIS (25%) on my lab reports. The DCIS was mentioned in the biopsy, so even in small samples it was seen as part of the whole cancer. I've always thought that IDC starts as DCIS.
-
I was originally diagnosed with DCIS, but had a second MRI biopsy because of a spot that lit up. That path report said they found both DCIS and IDC, though the IDC is small (.5cm).
-
I was IDC without DCIS. There are several studies, I cant get them to paste, which say IDC only, has a slightly worse prognosis than DCIS plus IDC, but it is not significant. My onc couldn't give me a reason why I had no DCIS, when he said IDC starts from DCIS: I guess they just don't know.
-
Mine said no DCIS and I have IDC with lymph node invasion. I thought it was totally different... although IDC starts as DCIS. I guess it changes and sometimes there just is no trace of DCIS left. Good question. Now I'm wondering what the answer is.
