BRCA test via saliva, just as reliable as blood??

I did the BRCA test with the scope mouth wash kit, is that just as reliable as having your blood drawn? My OB's office called and told me I was negative for any mutations. I am SHOCKED! My mom is BRCA1+. I have been preparing myself to hear that I am positive. I clearly have my mom's "genes". I'm just wondering how likely it is to have a false negative.

The DNA is the same, the result should be the same... Well sometimes people have bone marrow transplants and then the blood comes from the transplant too, but it just makes blood DNA less reliable. Not the other way around?

TN, and twice, sounds very much like BRCA1+! Did you test for the entire BRCA gene? Or for the specific mutation your mother has? Did you get a copy of the test result? Did you see a genetic counselor?

EDITED:  Just noted in your profile that the two cancers are your mother's? And on FORCE, that you two are going to see a GC? Best of luck & let's hope that it is a clear-cut true negative result and that it is one of the genes you didn't inherit from your mother!

All sorts of strange things happen sometimes with the tests. On FORCE forums, one story was how a doctor never opened an envelope with a positive test result but told the patient that she was negative. Another mishap tale had a doctor ordering a BRAF gene test instead of a BRCA gene test. Double-checking the things just won't hurt.

Yes, those two dx's are my mom's. She had to go all the way to Santa Barbara to see the genetic counseler, and that was right after she had just started chemo. Once she feels better, (she only has one treatment left) we will go back down to Santa Barbara to speak with the counseler again. I haven't gotten my actual report yet. Thought it would be in the mail today but it wasn't :/ I know they definately tested me for my mom's specific mutation, and I'm curious to see if they tested me for anything else. One of my mom's sisters tested with her that same day, and she was negative. I know they did the BART test on her, and everything on that was also negative.

Good grief. Sometimes Dr.'s just don't know what they are doing.
