I recently queried my bone endocrinologist to get his opinion of calcium supplements (in light of the earlier study that linked calcium supplements with heart attacks and other problems).  In his response, he also sent me a link to a statement by the National Osteoporois Foundation (below). I think everyone's in agreement that it's best to get calcium from our food, but if that's not happening, supplements can help. In my case, I have a milk allergy, so it's a challenge. When I met w/ this doc, we did a detailed analysis of my diet to get a clear picture of my calcium intact. My doc  stands by his recommendation that I take a small amount of supplemental calcium each day.

Unrelated, here's a link to a website that shows the amount of calcium in food. I found it via google. There may be other sources that are similar or that have longer lists.
