"Empowered Antibodies" May Be More Effective, Less Toxic Than Some Other Cancer Drugs.

On the front of its Business Day section, the New York Times (6/1, B1, Pollack, Subscription Publication) reports on "a new class of cancer drugs that may be more effective and less toxic than many existing treatments." These drugs, "known variously as antibody-drug conjugates, armed antibodies or empowered antibodies," harness "antibodies to deliver toxic payloads to cancer cells, while largely sparing healthy cells." Findings "from a large clinical trial of" one such drug, T-DM1, are "expected to attract attention at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology this weekend in Chicago."
