Intraductal papilloma vs DCIS

Hi,

My mom passed away a month ago and it's been bothering me since I have been going through her medical notes. Seeing that she had surgery for an intraductal papilloma in 1999 and was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2004, should that intraductal been investigated to the fullest to see if it was DCIS? I only ask because I find it very hard to believe my mom had blood coming out of her nipple, this surgery and then 5 years later have such severe metastasis. Her primary at the time (the one who said it was a papilloma) brushed her off saying that the bleeding and lumps she was feeling (including under her arm) were just former scar tissue from her lumpectomies.

I hate to make it seem like I'm starting a malpractice case but in reality, IF this cancer should have been diagnosed in 99 instead of five years later in such a grave outcome, I would like to know the probability. To me, it seems that any blood out of the nipple and lumps felt should have been investigated to the fullest instead of brushed off. If so, I will admit I'm pretty pissed. No one should ever get a misdiagnosis.
