Is an 8cm ovarian cyst something to worry about???

Hi Girlies,

I had an abdominal ultrasound on Tuesday and while she was looking around I mentioned to the sonographer that my womb is killing me and it's sensitive around the lower pelvic area, also mentioned to her that my aunt died of ovarian cancer when she was 35. She puts the gel on and rolls over my pelvic area and says oh you have an ovarian cyst and it's rather large, I said how large and she said 8cm!!............She said she will send the report to my oncologist. I finished chemo Dec29th 2011...................

Should I be worried and concerned ladies???

    I'll be heading to pelvic ultrasound myself, as an MRI to rule out bone mets found fibroids and a cyst (hopefully).  The fun never ends!

    I think women can get such large cysts removed to keep other complications (like bursting) at bay.  I have a ton of friends who have done really well with the surgery.

    I have heard caffeine reduction can be helpful, and some women swear by certain diets.  I have one who says cutting corn really made a difference.

    Since you are on Tamoxifen, that's probably the cause. I've had cysts pre-BC as large as 12cm & they always resolved. I was concerned about getting cysts while on Tamox & was told that if I do, that they will resolve if the Tamoxafen is stopped. As long as the cysts are fluid filled & not solid.

    It may very well be a "gift" from Tamoxifen. I never had any pelvic issues until recently, courtesy of Tamoxifen.

    I have a 7 cm cyst im not on tamox but i am brca +. My cyst was compound and blood filled. The ob ordered a ca 125 test and an ova1 test to rule out ovarian cancer. If u r concernes u could request the blood tests. The ova 1 is supposed to be a better prognostic than the ca125. Both mine were normal and so we r wait and see with a follow up us in 6 weeks. I hope urs is nothing also.

    Heyas

    I had 7cm cyst on one side and a 5cm one on the other - fortunately neither turned out to be cancerous but they were flipping' painful to live with.

    You can ask about having the cysts removed, or the ovaries if you're done with them. Had minre removed in jan and it's made a huge difference to QoL. They should offer you a biopsy at least given your family history though

    {hugs}
