SO Boyfriend is distant, Suggestions?

I know this may be a hopeless question but my boyfriend is distant. We have only been dating for 7 months and he is a very tender hearted person and I think he is scared of me. He has been very supportive up until this last week, I asked him if it was me and he said no he didn't think so he was just in a funk and was enjoying his alone time. We both have a love for baseball and since I've been sick he isn't getting the girlfriend he signed up for, we haven't been able to do much. He told me a couple weeks ago he couldn't have sex because he was scared to hurt me and it just seemed weird then followed that up with it won't last forever and he loves me. Do I just leave him be and let him figure out on his own if he still wants to be with me? I'm 38 now and he is the nicest man I've dated then cancer comes along and screws up my life.
