I had a horrible experience with by bilateral mastectomy. It was not preventative...I had stage 1 breast cancer.  I, too, had infection, skin necrosis, etc.  I was hospitalized for 15 nights and had three additional surgeries.

I put the blame squarely on my plastic surgeon. My standard of  care was unacceptable. I did my homework. He was a highly recommended part of the university cancer center that I go to. As soon as I could walk out the door, I found a new plastic surgeon. Things began to get much better. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion. Sometimes, things just happen. Call it bad luck, but the care received did not impact the results. I am convinced that my outcome would have been different had I had another doctor.

Thanks for getting in touch to be honest I think it was down to the care i recieved and the doctor as my expanders were put infront of the muscle and the drains were removed when there was 90mls in them I also wasn't given antibiotics after the op as a precaution. Also the entrance scars for the masectomy run down near the armpits which a few people have said isn't the normal way. My surgeon is highly regarded over here as well and has done a lot of papers on breast surgery. I am under a plastic surgery specialist now I have to travel further but it's worth it. I hope you are ok now. Do you know how long non permanent expanders can be left in?

My second time with reconstruction, I went with DIEP surgery. It was one heck of an initial surgery, but the results are amazing. I don't know how long permanent expanders can be left in. Hopefully, someone will come along with the answer.
