Ultrasound indecisiveness

Options

Hi, I've had chemo and I'm just about to finish up radiation on Monday. Two weeks ago I noticed a lump on the side of my good boob, I noticed it because the area hurt like a bad bruise so I gave it a poke and there was a lump there. It stopped hurting a couple of days later (even with me poking it every so often!). The registrar gave it a feel at our weekly appointment and suggested we wait for a week to see if it disappears, it felt lymph nodey to him. The following week my onc felt it up and she scheduled an ultrasound.

Practically the next day I found it hard to find the lump, a few days down the track and it's there, but sometimes easier to pinpoint than others. My ultrasound is booked for 6 days away, my question is, if it apparently disappears before then should I cancel the ultrasound? Is there any point to going ahead with it if things feel normal by then?

Hi Taika - I would still go ahead with the ultrasound if it were me.  It will give you peace of mind if it is checked out.  The fact that you couldn't feel it at one point means it could have been enlarged due to hormones or your immune system fighting something off.

I am personally a bit obsessive and can't relax once I have it in my mind that something could be wrong. Better to have the U/S, the celebrate when you find out it is nothing!!

Please get back with what is happening with you.  all the best!!

Get the ultra sound!  I have a lump in my armpit that comes and goes. I finally had an MRI - luckily it was nothing, but now I don't worry when it recurs. Mine was a lymph node. Get the ultra sound for your peace of mind--

No, go ahead with the ultrasound.  I know this causes anxiety, but it is always better to be sure.

Thanks for your comments ladies. I had the ultrasound, the lump I can feel is a lymph node and the radiologist didn't think it needed further examination.

However, they found another mass in there, and they want to biopsy that. So, I'm going back in 10 days to get that done.

I'm glad I got the ultrasound, if this mass does turn out to be cancer then it will only be because of that big, fat lymph node that it was picked up as even though I know where it is I can't feel it.
