ACS/Relay for Life and BC

Options

Just wondering if any of you who are further ahead in this journey than I know much about the American Cancer Socity and breast cancer...I have learned enough to know that if I am going to throw in behind an organization, it will not be SGK and a friend of mine is doing the upcoming Relay for Life which is sponsored by the ACS...just wondering if anyone has any info about the money they raise, % that goes to research, % that goes to BC, etc...

Thanks in advance for any info...I suppose I could research myself but that would take me away from the joy of doing my income taxes ;)

Hi kltb04- I have been doing Relay for Life for years. I am not sure about the percentages question you asked but I can tell you that ACS supported the beginning of the research that identified the BRCA gene mutations and being BRCA+ that is important to me. Hopefully someone will come along and answer your question.

I am doing my taxes too;so many medical expenses this year! I have to get off BCO and get them done...

I feel very comfortable supporting ACS. My local RFL was started by some employees of the school district that I work for about 4 years ago. It has grown quite large and was moved last year from one of our elementary school sites to a middle school. I have been the beneficiary of an ACS program and i love the fact that they deal with all cancers. I will, for the first time, walk in the survivors lap this year. It makes me a bit sad but I'm grateful to be a survivor! The ACS site has their financials, which I have been too lazy to check, for now ! Caryn

hi kltb04, I did Race for the Cure the last two years but this year am doing Relay for Life.  There's someone at work who's done Relay for years and I've always sponsored a luminaria but this year joined her team.  My mom's been doing Relay for many years, too.  I haven't checked it out but here's a website with info on ACS and other charitable orgs.  http://www.charitynavigator.org/

Cool - thanks all - I just got a fb update from this friends about the luminaria sponsorship - I don't know that I am up to participating (just finished chemo #2) but I thought about donating in honor of me - lol. I live in a small town and everyone knows all your business and I am still not really comfortable being "out there" amongst the public.

Last year I was the ambassador and gave the survivor's speech at our local relay for life. Walking as a survivor is emotional but it is empowering seeing such a celebration of our lives! I met so many survivors all willing to share their experiences. This was before I found BCO...same kind of support!

When my daughter was 10 she founded our team; she is 20 now. We have been relating for a long time!

My husband is participating in a run to raise money for the American Cancer Society---crazy man is going to run 13+ miles barefoot!Surprised

He is part of DetermiNation.  If anyone would like to donate through him, please feel free to PM me and I will give you a link to his ACS website.

Just an FYI. ACS has an excellent rating for how it uses the funds it collects. I am a volunteer. It appears most of the organization depends on volunteers (unpaid) to run these events. Some of the staff appears to be low paid and work lots of overtime. I've applied for a few jobs and they have warned me about 60+ hours at event times (which I know means more like 70+).
