Baby after treatment

Hello, ladies - 

Did anyone here have a baby after completing all the treatments?  Or plannign on having a baby after completing the treatmetns?

I got diagnosed as I was trying for #2, and we have frozen some embryos (I had my mastectomy 2 weeks ago, will start chemo in 2 weeks now), and my husband and I really want to have a bigger family (our son just turned 2).

How long did you wait?  How did it goo/is it going?

I need somethign to look forward to, have a definitive plan, because otherwise I get really low...

Hi Elesha,

We froze our embryos too. I completed chemo a year and a half ago, took tamoxifen for 10 months and went off it in August and finished reconstruction at the end of October 2011. We started trying right after and got pregnant In December but miscarried at the end of January when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I decided to let it pass naturally but I waited 4 weeks and nothing happened so I had to have surgery to remove the fetus. I had some troubles with bleeding after and had another ultrasounds 2 weeks ago and they said I have a cyst in my ovaries and some blood clots. I'm hoping I won't have to have another surgery to get rid of he blood clots and now I am just waiting to have a normal period so we can try again. So I was able to get pregnant but I don't think my body was quite ready so we will try again soon hopefully!!!! I'll keep you posted!

Hi Elesha,

I'm in the same boat as you in that we were planning baby number 2 and our daughter was 2 when I found out about the cancer. I just finished chemo in January and finished Radiation in March. Given my type of cancer they recommended against having any IVF, so I had Zoladex for the duration of my chemo to slightly improve my chances. I was told that if my period did come back, I would have the ovaries of a 43 year old, so my chances are pretty slim, but still it's not been totally ruled out.

I'm supposed to be on Tamoxifen for 5 years, but if I do the full course of that uninterrupted, I've got no chance of getting pregnant again, so I don't know what to do. My husband is very reluctant to me coming off Tamoxifen early, but I think that's the only way we'd have any chance.

SKD - I'm sorry to hear about your loss. We lost one before I got pregnant with my daughter. I really hope the second attempt works out for you guys.

I had a baby after treatment. We were cleared to try after I had three normal periods. It took a year to get pregnant, but the pregnancy was perfectly normal and the baby healthy.

Nordy - thank you for posting.  You give me so much hope.  What chemo did you have?   And how old were you when you were diagnosed?  How old is your little one now?

Hi Elesha,

Just popping in to tell you that two women from my March 2009 chemo group both had babies post treatment. Their names on here are Sakura and Tanasha. You may want to PM them. The older ladies (like me) in the group were like mother hens waiting for our younger gals to have their babies and we were all elated with their safe, healthy arrival.

I have two boys ages 12 and 5.  When I received my diagnosis last July, at the age of 31, I think the doctors pretty much assumed that I was done with having kids and really didn't give me much time to consider freezing my eggs.  My frame of mind at that point was to hurry and get this tumor out of me and get my treatment started.  Well I finished chemo in December and I have to tell you that it has really been on my mind especially feeling like I have been given a second chance at life and I am regretful that I didn't have the procedure done.  I know my husband, who is the biological father of my youngest child, has really been feeling the itch too.  I have yet to get my periods back which stopped after my first round of chemo.  I'm told it could take up to two years before we can determine if the menopause will be permanent.  So I have been wondering what the success rate has been for others.  To NORDY-did you conceive naturally?

I was 37 at diagnosis and just had my first child. I had 12 weekly Taxol followed by AC every other week. Since I was post partum, I never had a period between the birth of my child and the start of chemo. Chemo ended in September. I got my first period in February, and we started trying to conceive three months later. I did not freeze eggs and was not allowed to go on any kind of fertility, so we were going on hope and a prayer... and pillows under the hips after sex lolololol. Sorry if TMI! Anyway, I found out we were pregnant when I went in for a regular gyn appt and to talk to the doc about why we weren't getting pregnant. When I told her I was a few days late, she ran a urine test and voila, we were already pregnant! My little one is perfectly healthy and so much fun to be around. She is a joy. I also have two friends that had babies that were conceived naturally after breast cancer treatment. There is hope. Hang in there! Lots of hugs.

I am in the same boat as you - had our embyros frozen in October 2011 before I began treatment. I have 6 more weeks of chemo and will be taking Lapatinib for *hopefully* only 6 months. I dont need to do Tamoxifen thankfully so I am hoping by the end of this year I will be able to get pregnant.  My doctor said I could try 1-2 months after all the chemo was done which will hopefully be in October/November with the end of Lapatinib.  I am the same way, I want a plan and I want to know when I can try so I have something else to look forward to.  I do have to ask my PS when I can try as well since I had the DIEP surgery, I have no idea how long hed want me to wait to try so everything is fully healed.  That was the end of February so Im really hoping 9-10 months is enough time!

hi elesha, I am one of the 2 women pickle mentioned. I had  a baby almost  2 years to the day after finishing chemo. I didn't need to use IVF, my periods returned naturally after chemo/Zoladex and I conceived naturally. I refused Tamoxifen so that I could try and conceive. Arthur is now 8 months old and perfectly healthy, thank God. I am still breast feeding him from my non-cancer side.

Hi everybody

I would like to ask just one simple question. How long you waited to have a baby? There are many studies about the time line...Here in EU doctors say its better to wait 2 and more year. I do not have Tamoxifen, I am taking Herceptin. The hole cancer thing was a bit strange by me, for 6 monts dr. could not say exactly what it is. Everything was negative. The treatment went just perfect, now I feel just great. I finisch herceptin this year september. And now I am not sure if I will wait another two years or just one or even more. If you have any ideas, thoughts infos ...please...let me know.

i have had two children after treatment, i am doing great.  my first one was born exactly 4 years after my first chemo. i did femara with ovridel shot and iui to get preggo with my son and my second child a girl was a surprise, no plans or noit even trying!

hi Kitatun, this is a really old thread but I just wanted to add I was diagnosed at 30, completed treatment and have gone on to have my first baby 6 months ago. She was born 2 years after chemo finished and were both happy and healthy. Best of luck to you
