Bone Scan Question...

Hi Girls

I had a completely clear bone scan Feb 9 after diverting pains in my lower back that shot to both sides of my pelvis.  The pains continued, but then diminished somewhat for a a couple of weeks, only happening  now and then, but then....

After a bout of bacterial bronchitus that came out of the blue, two weeks I have this constant pain in the iliac crest of my pelvis and resonating into my lower back.  It is there all the time and is not like a normal muscular pain that is relieved by lying down etc?

Has anyone out there had bone mets even though they had a clear bone scan?  Not sure whether I should report this or what to do next?  It is relieved by pain killers only sometimes?

Dear Nx, I can relate to your frustration. It seems that when ever I get bone scans for back and hip pain, the results come back clear which I'm happy about but the radiologist does not report any other thing that might be going on. You might want to ask your primary care doc to set you up for an x-ray of your lower back and spine, and then they can see if you have a bulging or slipped disc which is resonating to your pelvis. For my pain I'm taking 2 naproxin every morning, and 1 at night before going to bed. This regime keeps the pain under control but not totally gone. Hopefully this helps you a little bit.

For back pains here in u.s we get MRI of spine. If pain continues. MRI of spine is also done for recurrence. It's with contrast and the whole spine takes like 6 hours

Hi there, symptoms like that can also be from a herniated disc pressing on a nerve. It can also be from inflamation of the SI joint. Both can be relieved by getting injections in your epidural area and the injections can be given 3x a year. they keep my pain away.

It may be worthwhile to check with an orthopedica doctor or neurologist - both who can evaluate for this issue that could be the cause of your pain.

Bone scans show nothing in my spine, but CT and MRI both show multiple osteoblastic lesions. I don't put any faith in just a bone scan any more.

That's exactly what I expected!  About six of my seven tumours didn't show up on scans because they've been grade 1!  Scarey...I always say, if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong, push to get further checks...
