     Sodium bicarbonate is a mainstream treatment for acidosis. Oncologists use it  to neutralize the acid properties of most cancer agents in chemotherapy. The  Arizona Cancer Center of the University of Arizona,  the Department of Pharmacology of Wayne State University in Michigan, and H. Lee  Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Florida are conducting a study  that indicates the capacity of sodium bicarbonate to alter the pH of tumor cells  that could inhibit its spread and progression. Cancer cells cannot survive in an alkaline  environment.The acid environment of tumor cells is responsible for allowing them to  thrive and spread. Making the tumor cells more alkaline increases the ability of  other anti-carcinogenic drugs to become more effective in preventing tumor  activities. (See Reference 3.) Tumors are more acidic than other normal cells  and tissues. An acidic environment is low in oxygen, and changing the pH to  alkaline allows an increase of oxygen supply to the cell. This controls the  abnormal function of the tumor and prevents it from metastasizing. (See Resource  1.)

A $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health will enable University of Arizona biomedical engineering researchers to improve the way doctors measure the effectiveness of drinking baking soda to fight breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, sodium bicarbonate is being promoted as an alternative treatment to cancer by an Italian oncologist, Dr. Tullio Simoncini. He believes that cancer is caused by a yeast infection, and sodium bicarbonate has the capacity to kill the yeast. (See Reference 1.) Dr. Simoncini published his research thesis, entitled "Cancer is Fungus," presenting fungal infection as the main cause of cancer. However, no scientific evidence is available to support that cancer is due to yeast infection and that sodium bicarbonate can directly cure cancers, although studies have been conducted regarding the ability of sodium carbonate to influence the pH levels of cancer cells.

Drinking baking soda has been proven to reduce or eliminate the spread of breast cancer to the lungs, brain and bone, but too much baking soda can also damage normal organs.

"In other words, this test is designed to lead to personalized medicine for cancer patients, by optimizing the therapy to each individual," said Mark "Marty" Pagel, UA associate professor of biomedical engineering and lead researcher on the project.

Just as people feel the burn from lactic acid produced in their muscles during rigorous exercise, tumors also produce lactic acid when they are actively growing, Pagel said. This acid destroys surrounding tissue, which allows the tumor to grow, invade surrounding areas, and metastasize to other organs in the body. "The acid also provides resistance to common chemotherapies," Pagel said.

"Measuring the pH in a tumor is essential, because some drugs only work at the right pH," said Jennifer Barton, professor and head of UA biomedical engineering. "Patients can actually change their body's pH to make their cancer drugs more effective - it can be as simple as drinking baking soda - but this process has to be carefully monitored."

The goal of the research is to prove that this unique and innovative MRI tumor measurement technique will help improve, and in some cases save, the lives of women with breast cancer.

I'm curious to see the results of this, but not hopeful.  Evebarry, where is the proof that "baking soda can reduce or eliminate the spread of breast cancer?"  Did they do another previous study?

The main objection to the baking soda theory was always the "fact" that we can't alter the pH of the blood which is strictly regulated, and that was my main doubt about it.  But when I see so many pushing the same theory I always keep an open mind and have read a lot about it.  This sentence stood out in the article;

"Measuring the pH in a tumor is essential, because some drugs only work at the right pH," said Jennifer Barton, professor and head of UA biomedical engineering. "Patients can actually change their body's pH to make their cancer drugs more effective - it can be as simple as drinking baking soda - but this process has to be carefully monitored." 

I don't believe a University research study of this calibre employing the use of expensive MRI's would be approved if it wasn't based on good science with a good chance of success.

As someone else said, I thought the body strictly regulated the pH level. But...this could be interesting. This study was on PubMed.

 My friends aunt went to Canada...dx with terminal cancer given a few months to live. Her cancer is now gone! I would try this first.

A good family friend, dx with cancer several yrs back, sent me a reciepe for baking soda/cancer therapy. I do not know if this is the one used in Arizona or Canada. I haven't tried it. As far as I know baking soda isn't going to kill you. It is an alternative treatment that is apparently working for my friend and others. If I were to be dx with cancer again, I would probably try it.

So here's the receipe my friend sent me.  ... You might want to check first with your physican

Subject: Re: Baking Soda & Cancer

"In an electric mixer,

• MIX in 1 teaspoon of baking soda into
• 1 cup of Raw Non-Pasteurized Honey
• Mix on low to medium until foam dissipate (Approx. 10 minutes)

• Add in 4 tablespoon of Cinnamon and continue mixing until the foaming has completely subsided.

 The entire article has been copied all over the internet, but the source is highly suspect.  I imagine if a cure for advanced cancer of the stomach and bones had been found 17 years ago we would have heard about it by now.  I like to check the sources of information as often they are no more than rumour or misinformation.  I have no idea if the recipe is beneficial for anything.

This is what Wikipedia says about The Weekly World News, USA edition.  I don't know about the Canadian edition if it ever existed.

Again, thank you Joy. I wasn't for sure but hope there was some merit to it because our family friend is convinced this works and said he knows someone who tried it and it worked.. He's been struggling with brain cancer for years. He' tried conventional cancer treatment that didn't turn out so well. I have heard that there is a reciepe for baking soda with maple surup. I haven't seen it or heard results from it or am I sure if it's all hipe.

However the articles I posted from Canada and Arizona Univ are looking into baking soda to treat cancer. I hope something becomes of it. I do believe there is something to baking soda/cancer.

And for everyone who might want to jump all over me for posting this receipe without doing the great research first that Joy did, I apologize.

"This treatment is a combination of pure, 100% maple syrup and baking soda and was first reported on the Cancer Tutor site. When mixed and heated together, the maple syrup and baking soda bind together. The maple syrup targets cancer cells (which consume 15 times more glucose than normal cells) and the baking soda, which is dragged into the cancer cell by the maple syrup, being very alkaline forces a rapid shift in pH killing the cell. The actual formula is to mix one part baking soda with three parts (pure, 100%) maple syrup in a small saucepan. Stir briskly and heat the mixture for 5 minutes. Take 1 teaspoon daily, is what is suggested by Cancer Tutor but one could probably do this several times a day.

Previous work using buffer therapy has exclusively used bicarbonate, which may act through alternative pathways, e.g. through activation of carbonic anhydrases. The current work demonstrates that alternative, non-volatile buffers can be equally efficacious as bicarbonate. Thus the mechanism of metastasis inhibition appears to be limited to pH buffering. It also introduces alternative buffers that may be more applicable in a clinical setting for acute or chronic use.

Eve, you have nothing to apologise for as most people don't have the time or motivation to do all that internet searching. Putting the information on the forum gives crazy pedants like me the opportunity to chase up the facts so the outcome is good if these ideas can be either confirmed or refuted. 

I don't see anything wrong with trying a diet to see if it helps providing common sense is used.  Again, I'll keep repeating that if only there was a way people could verify their diagnosis, alternative treatments and outcome online then we could make a better assessment of these testimonials where a "friend, relative or acquaintance" was helped. Of course we can't prove that the treatment in question worked or if some other factor was the cause, but at least we could narrow it down a bit.

As long as there are rumours and false claims, they will continue to pour doubt on all claims including those that may be genuine. I think the artificial division between evidence based medicine and experimental or alternative medicine is creating unnecessary distress and possibly causing helpful treatments to be passed over.  Here is a great example of a popular alternative that is at last being taken seriously, though from a slightly different angle to the original intent of the diet. I hope it moves forward successfully.

My husband found another receipe with baking soda and maple surup. If it doesn't hurt your body, it's well worth a try. But, I wouldn't know one way or the other right now because I am NED.

I was just reading about the study and it said they were only going to have 8 women participate. I wish it were larger and you think it could be with a 2 million dollar grant. All my MO talks about is putting me in Chemo trials. Not interested in those.

I guess the expense is due to the intense use of MRI's to study the before and after effects on the tumours. Hopefully they will study the effects with and without chemo and over different time frames. These are dedicated volunteers to put themselves through so many MRI's.

This quote suggests that the results of this study will make it easier for further baking soda studies so hopefully they can run bigger studies in the future.

I have not been able to make the maple syrup bind with the baking soda as it's supposed to. It separates on cooling.  If it isn't bound together, the baking soda wouldn't be carried into the cancer cell and the maple syrup would feed the cancer.
