On metformin but not on a trial?

Any of you taking metformin but not on a trial? Want to hear about side effects & any tips/pointers you are willing to share. My PCP ordered it for me- haven't started yet. Finished Herceptin 3 wks ago- been on Arimidex since July.

Would like to hear any ideas. I read more today where this medication sounds promising. My PCP didn't feel it would hurt me.

Just curious.

Hi Lisa... I was on metformin for 5 years for fertility issues for each of my pregnancies. The only side effect was neausea and a little diarrhea for the first couple of weeks. My recommendation is to always take it with a meal. Once my body was used to it I didn't have any SE"s. Good luck.

Lisa, there's a pretty long thread in the forum Clinical Trials, Research, News and Study Results under "Day to Day Matters."  Many people have posted who aren't in a clinical trial.  I tried to get into a trial but missed by my dates of treatment.  I am following a Canadian trial, for which I would otherwise have met criteria, and am taking 850mg of metformin twice a day off-label.  After one night of incredible gas, I have had no side effects whatsoever.
