Question re Air Travel

My trip to Nashville is one month away and I ended up deciding to fly rather than drive.  Still have to decide how to deal with my arm for the trip (sleeve/glove, Tribby, or wrap), but I have another question that I haven't seen covered.  I can't remember the exact wording, but airline websites say that an extra bag is allowed for medical reasons, and I wonder if any of you have taken advantage of this.

I travel light and my favorite suitcase is smaller than standard carry-ons, so fitting in Tribby and bandaging materials would be a problem.  Since flying did affect my arm back in my 1998 round of LE, I know I have to take everything along so I can deal with whatever may happen.  I'm curious to know if this extra bag is allowed without hassle.

You may need a letter from your physician stating that the garments and wraps are medically necessary to keep with you as a carryon. (ie you might have to change from sleeve to bandages on the plane if your arm swells) I do know extra carryons are allowed because my husband who is paraplegic, takes his Cpap machine in a separate bag as a carryon in addition to his laptop bag, wheelchair cushion and transfer board. There usually is a representative for each airline who deals specifically with medical disability and access issues.  You should call them ahead of time and find out what type of documentation or clearance you need to take an extra carryon bag.  I don't think you will have a problem if you verify in advance what is required.
