My mother underwent treatment for breast cancer, and everything looked great. Today we just found out fluid in her lungs contained cancer cells. We are making two changes 1) Her treatment center and doctor and 2) her diet. I have been reading a lot of information on a vegan diet, and the tremendous results of that. Could anyone share success stories on diet changes.

virtuouswoman, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mother's situation, but hopefully some diet changes along with whatever conventional tx is recommended will have an impact.  It's really difficult to attribute success totally to diet changes, since our bc's and our diet changes are all a bit different.  But here are three books that I've personally relied on to help me make a lot of changes:

Anti-Cancer, A New Way Of Life; David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD.  Although he very recently passed away, he survived 19 years -- virtually unheard of with the type of cancer he was battling. His suggestions are all scientifically based, and his book is full of lots of stories of long time survival.

Beating Cancer With Nutrition; Patrick Quillin, PhD, RD, CNS.  He's the former VP of nutritional services for Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  A wealth of good info!

Life Over Cancer; Keith Block, MD., founder of the world renown Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment.  If you're anywhere near Chicago, this is one of the best places in the US for integrative care.

You might also check both the Complementary and the Alternatives sections of these discussion boards.  Click on Forum Index above, then scroll down until you see them.  You'll find lots of on-going conversations (threads) about diet, food & nutrition.

I'm sorry you have reason to be here, but I'm glad you've found BCO!   (((Hugs)))   Deanna

PS ~ I just want to add -- don't overlook exercise!  Many studies have shown its benefit in preventing recurrences, and a new study published just this week shows it can actually change our DNA.  Let me know if you need a link to any of these studies.

Thank you so much. We are adding lots of vegetable/fruits in her diet now as we transition to new doctor. I am doing it with her, and feel the results myself :-) From what I am reading, it takes a combination of everything to defeat this thing. We are expecting great things.

virtuous, do you know about The Dirty Dozen?  It's a list of the fruits & veggies found each year to have the most herbicide & pesticide contamination.  Buying organic fruits & veggies as much as you can is important, and The Dirty Dozen is a great place to start.  I was told @ UCLA that two things you absolutely must buy organic are apples (because they wax over the pesticides they've sprayed on them, making it virtually impossible to remove the pesticide; otherwise be sure to peel your apples), and strawberries (because the pesticide goes all the way through those).

    Here's the list:  http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/eat-safe/dirty-dozen-foods#fbIndex1
