BRCA results over the phone or office

I just received a call saying my BRCA results are in and to make an appointment. did anyone get positive or negative results over the phone. Thanks. I have been waiting for over a month and just want to know already. My appointment is tomorrow.

They won't give any results over the phone.  I had to schedule an appt to meet with my genetic counsler so they could explain everything in the report.  Negative or positive results, you will have alot of questions so it is good to go in to go over the report :0)

I received a phone call (negative) and then they mailed me the results. I went over the results with the PA who did the genetic counseling at my next chemo visit.

I received my results in the most reprehensible way...I was in my surgical gown with the wire inserted for my lumpectomy when I notice a missed call on my cell. It was from my surgical oncologist's office. I was less than an hour from surgery so I called them back. When I asked why they called, the PA said I was positive for BRCA1+ and I needed to walk over to their offices to discuss whether I would have the surgery. I collapsed in a puddle of tears in the surgical waiting area. I had to do a walk of shame...in my open back gown, surgical booties and cap...to her office, crying all the way. They had me wait in the waiting room (seriously!) until the doctor was ready to see me. She asked if I wanted to cancel the surgery and have a mastectomy. I honestly could not process it all. Needless to say, I now have another surgical oncologist.

My genetic counselor requires her patients to come in for an office visit to receive their results, regardless of whether they are positive or negative.  I tested negative, but she went over the report with me in great detail at the appointment.

I got the call to come in and meet with my gyno for the results - his last appt. on a Fri. afternoon, and I was quite surprisingly, BRCA2 positive. Normally, his nurse gives me "good news" on the phone.  My dr. recommended immediate removal of my ovaries and a double prophylactic mastectomy.  I had a lumpectomy for a very small tumor in 2009, followed by radiation, tamoxifen and clodronate (an anti-osteoporis med that I take as part of a study) and life is good so, I don't need this major dev't, clearly.  But, we survivors take things in stride.  The ovaries out is a no-brainer.  Initially, I thought "no way" on the preventive mastectomy but, am doing my due diligence and looking into nipple sparing surgery with the best surgeon I can find in NY.  I figure I have to do it - as my gyno says, who is so vigilent of my health, it's not a matter of "if" but, "when", I do it.  Good luck to you.  Remember, knowledge is power.

I think every place is different. I insisted mine be given over the phone because insurance wasn't paying for the in-person GC visits I had.  I didn't want to spend hours hassling over another bill for an in-person visit that could be done in one phone call.  Besides, I already knew all my options and my preferences, from my own research and the first GC visit.  I just needed the test result.

Edited to add:  As a shout-out to the universe's need for balance... later that week I received another call informing me I had just won a video contest, grand prize $20,000.  Took the sting out of the positive BRCA result, for a short time anyway   Of course, when I was asked on camera what I would do with the money, I had to make something up because what was going on in my head was "paying for surgeries...".

I received my BRCA+ results over the phone, but it may have been because I stalked my genetic counselor until she picked up. But I still think she would have given me the results via phone even if I hadn't hounded her.

I got my brca 1 positive results over the phone, while I was waiting for a scan. I surprised myself that I cried, as I expected to be positive as I have a long family history of breast cancer and my mom died of ovarian cancer. I had told him it was ok to call me with reults, as I did not expect to be upset!

demiller-that sounds horrible, I am so sorry you had to go through that. That situation was not handled properly at all, by any of those doctors, to make you wait in your gown? Glad you found a new doc.

I got a phone call on a Friday afternoon. Negative result. I told her I was really glad it was negative cause hearing the opposite would cause me to be a wreck over the weekend. She told me if it had been positive she would not have called on a Friday afternoon!



Demiller, that is the worst thing I have heard. I cannot imagine. I've had those wire locs and the LAST thing one wants to do is sit in waiting room like that. Grrrrr. Didn't they even wheelchair you over? It's just terrible what you went thru.

I got a positive result, over the phone, but I live 366 miles away from the geneticist, so maybe they made an exception.  I still had to schedule a followup appointment to go over the report.  One issue for me was I had a LUMP scheduled 5 days after the results came in and if I was BRCA positive, I would probably be changing my surgery to BMX.

I will add, I was somewhat surprised at being positive at my late age, as was the geneticist.  I was numb when I found out I had BC.  I cried, alone in my office, when I found out I was BRCA+, but I couldn't wait, scheduling wise, to be there in person.  It would have been difficult either way, imo.

thanks for all your support just got out of office with Dr. And I tested positive for the Brca 1. Some guess I will probably have to tell my family at some point. Yuck

I'm so sorry hanna....I am the first in my family to have found out officially and I still haven't faced the half of what that involves given some of our family trials and tribulations.  It's funny, some family just don't want to know, other's have had to fight their HMOs to even get the test (because they are male) and in my case, some family members I have not contact with, nor do I want to, yet I feel that need to tell them.  Good luck.

On the flip side, I think in a way we are lucky because of that other 1/3 that probably have a gene, but no one has even discovered it yet. Atleast we have the advantage of watching and/or preemptively challenging future cancers.  The one bad side is if we are the first to find out in our families, we become the sacrifical lamb for finding out our family members can be  BRCA+, imo.

Kam170- thanks your are 100 percent right. My mother, grandmother and her sister died of oc in their 30s. I had my ovaries removed and I wanted to find out for my children. My brother is going to get tested as well. I hope he does not have a problem because he is male as well. Thanks for all your great insight.



I am totally surprised for some reason I thought I would be negative. Anyway a women in my sons school was hit by a hit and run driver and is in really bad shape. This happened today. I am not going to sweat the small stuff. Tonight I am going to be thankful for what I do have.. Thanks again.
