hip aches much worse
Hi
I have posted on here recently regarding sciatica/back and hip pain issues. I know there are many people out there with worries of this kind so hoping for some feedback.
Have been struggling with sciatica which I have a long history of despite only being 41.I became so anxious about it that my GP ordered a bone scan. I cancelled it however because the symptoms seemed to improve. Also my onco didnt seem to think it necessary. Recent bloodwork is normal; although not sure if blood tests would show mets?
Today there has been a marked change. Instead of pain in right hip (intermittant), I have constant aching pain in both hips and back. Its like severe flu body ache on top of the original hip pain. Have taken my usual pain killers to no effect and I cant sleep.
Wondered if it could be a virus as I have had sinus issues also this week and cold symptoms, but temp is ok.
I just feel so unwell, tired and scared beyond belief. How are we meant to know the difference between bone mets and either:
a) sciatica
b) body aches from my ongoing Herceptin treatment
c) Tamoxifen
d) virus
Am due for Herceptin tx 15 on Fri but dont feel up to it.
Please help
Liz

You certainly have enough other reasons other than cancer that could be causing the pain. I know I hate any kind of testing whatsoever, and the ensuing wait and anxiety that the tests all cause, but if I were you, I would reschedule the bone scan and put your mind to ease as best you can. I am hoping this is something not related to cancer, but treatment, etc. With the herceptin and the tamoxifen, that is a distinct possibility. Sending positive vibes to you,

Thank you Linda. I have posted on the herceptin side effects thread and received some interesting info. Pharngitis is inflammation of the throat which has associated symptoms of body aches and generally feeling unwell. This week i have has a sore throat and sinus issues so it could be this. The increased pain did come on very suddenly today, wheras the sciatica has been coming and going a bit. and at times really improved. Ive had no sleep and im an emotional wreck. Sorry to vent...just so glad to reach out to kind people like yourself.

Hi Liz,
I'm sorry for the pain you're experiencing. Because of the way in which BC can spread, it is important to have the bone scan and see if that is the cause. However, I do want to stress how much chemo can cause long-term side effects of bone pain. It has definitely been terrible for me and is significant in my hips and back. I hope that all tests have come up clear for you and if so, please keep in mind that any or all of the things you listed, along with chemo can result in what you're experiencing.
